Lorev

The Sunken City

Lorev is the former capital of the Giant Kingdom and the location of the Northern Nereid Kingdom's seat of power. It was sunk beneath the sea by the wrath of the Goddess Selene in the event known as Selene's Fury.

Capital of a Nation

Lorev was a massive city, as it existed to house Giants. It is undoubtedly the largest city in history, though its modern incarnation pales in comparison to cities like Zephys and Camor.

It is said that it spanned over half of a continent, stretching from the very center, as it was the beating heart of the Giant Kingdom. This size is unfathomable to many in the present day, for there are no Giant cities anymore, but all present cities would be nothing to a Giant.   Lorev's size is incalculable because the land it stood on no longer exists, and all estimates sound far too ridiculous to most modern men.

The Other Kingdom of Lorev

The Northern Nereid Kingdom, when it broke off from the Southern Nereids, took over the ruins of the Giant Kingdom.   Many major cities popped up from beneath the waves, though two became particularly notable.   There was the capital of Salinia, the largest metropolitan area under the sea, and then there was what became known as Lorev, the seat of power for the Damolnath royal family and the Temple of Papatūānuku.   The trouble with Salinia was that it was considered by the Nereids a separate city, a new land from Lorev. In truth, both Salinia and Lorev, as well as most other Nereid cities, are simply the ruins of one city.   They are all Lorev, fractured pieces of one giant city.   It is for that simple reason that no one has been able to understand Lorev or the Giant Kingdom as a whole, because what was one city to Giants is an entire civilization to the smaller lifeforms that took over in the future.

Government

Multiple governments have held Lorev over time, depending on what is classified as Lorev by scholars and rulers of the day.

Founding

The exact story of Lorev's founding is unclear. It was millions of years before any other city was built, and it is said only few immortals live who were around: The Dragon Lords like Kath the Eternal, and the Vampire Lord known as Wolfram Von Errst.   The Giant Kingdom it came from was founded in -2,000,000 according to some few records, but the city of Lorev came before this, being the foundation of that civilization.   Various myths existed of the founding, made between its creation and destruction, but almost all were lost to time. Those that exist now are so far detached from the truth that they have no basis nor reason to even be spouted as if they were a fraction of the truth.   All that is known is that nothing is known.

Destruction

The city was destroyed by Selene's Fury, a giant tidal wave that flooded the entire continent that it sat on. All of its citizens and land were submerged and torn apart in the tide.   Some small pieces of the ruins remained on the plateaus that remained above the seas, what became known as the Northern Islands.

Discovery by the Nereids

It is unknown who discovered Lorev's ruins first: the Nereids or the Merfolk. There are stories told by both sides of both possibilities, and tales that follow of wars against the other to take the city.   The Nereids were the ones to win, taking Lorev as their own, expanding their Kingdom from the city of Salinia.
When discussing the ancient Lorev, before the Giant Kingdom, it is unclear who created and ran it.   When the Giant Kingdom took over, it is said to have been Storm Giants who wielded lightning that ruled, as lightning was said to be their greatest power. King Vulnon was the longest reigning and final King of Lorev, and he ruled with a court of every Item Mage as his subordinate, including:
  • The Time Mage Osmond
  • The Sword Mage Adalsteinn
  • The Dream Mage Eir
  • The Weapon Mage Einar
  • The Luck Mage Loki
While these Giants all had immense power, it is said even they paled in comparison to Vulnon, a man of such power that it is believed he could have destroyed the Giant Kingdom on his own. However, he had far too much of an ego to believe anything could challenge him, and he could not stop the wrath of a God, and therefore lost everything to Selene's Fury.   Later, the rebelious Damolnath family founded a Kingdom in the sunken ruins of Lorev, though Salinia, a larger settlement, was taken as the actual capital, and Lorev was the site for the most prominent Church as well as the palace of the Damolnaths and their servants.   Later, Lorev would become its own Petty Kingdom when the Northern Nereid Kingdom broke apart, with a government no longer dependent on other fragments of Lorev that had discarded the name they once held. Lorev now stood once more as the head of its own nation and the most prominent location in its region. An ancient city that still thrives, even if at a far different size and sea level.
