Urokris's training made him perfect for the battle, and the army was butter before his blows and tactics.
Ultimately, the battle would result in their victory and become known as Urokris's Dwarven Conflict. It was only later in life that he regretted having a war named after him. As a young, aspiring leader, it felt like a great honor, and a sign that maybe he truly was ready to be Grand Wizard.
But the troubles were only just starting.
Dia Ree by Jarhed
Like Father Unlike Son
Urokris spent his second year in a conflict against his father, as well as helping underclassmen like
Dia Ree with their struggles and helping to grow his perspective. Ultimately, he would battle against and kill his father.
At this point, Urokris had moved past those struggles. He was looking to the future, preparing himself to be Grand Wizard, and support was growing. One could go few places in the Draconian Villages without hearing someone saying they just wanted Urokris to be Grand Wizard already to lead them out of this slump.
His father was content as a soldier. Urokris didn't find pleasure in that. He wanted to lead.
Growing Tensions
Of course, there was someone rather important who couldn't escape hearing about the "next Grand Wizard" Urokris Erthar. This was Drixodal Vortrin, the 62nd and at the time current Grand Wizard.
Drixodal was hearing constantly that people wanted him gone, likely dead, so that some kid could replace him. It began driving him mad, so he insisted that Urokris be failed in all of his classes. Aphar Lorbarum pretended to do so, but instead kept teaching Urokris under Vortrin's nose.
But while Vortrin could not escape Urokris, Urokris could not escape Drixodal Vortrin either.
Every New Years Eve, a class of the Magic College is randomly selected for a party in the Magic College Arena with the Grand Wizard. The Class of 521 were the lucky winners on the eve of 519 changing into 520. Urokris and Vortrin were trapped together for New Years.
Drixodal Vortrin by Jarhed
The 520 Massacre
The Final Day of 519 was bright. The sun shone longer than it usually would in the sky, but when it went out, it was blotted by darkness. Many called it foreboding, but Urokris's classmates insisted it meant it was time. The end of an era.
Decrier, a
Korvian in Urokris's class, led a group of the students at the party to demand Vortrin step down.
This was exactly what Drixodal Vortrin feared.
Drixodal lashed out, flames erupting around the arena. His rage was unleashed, and more than that... his fear had been right. At least, that was what he thought. He thought they had gathered here to kill him, even if they were just peacefully asking him to step down.
Drixodal Vortrin did not want to be replaced.
He wanted to prove he was different from the other Grand Wizards that had taken the title since the Struggle had started 500 years prior. So, blinded by rage, he did what he could to show he was deserving of the title. That he was strong enough to push against threats to him and his people, that he was capable enough of a leader to take on an army.
And so, Drixodal Vortrin's flames lit the entire arena on fire. He burned everyone in the arena until they were dead. The two Professors, who were drinking in the corner, unaware of what was happening. 15 of the students, all gathered to support Urokris Erthar.
Only one man survived. A man resistant to flames, trained to withstand powerful blazes. Urokris Erthar watched the tragedy unfold before him, powerless to stop it. This event would be known as the 520 Massacre, the greatest tragedy in modern Draconian history.
Yernok Caerxan by Jarhed
Urokris was paralyzed. His own flames began activating, trying to stop it, but in his grief, all they did was sputter out. All of his hope, his promises for the future, burned to ash. His magic, then, did the same. All he could make now were ashes, the embers of a flame that had once been so promising. A flame that now died with his class.
Drixodal Vortrin didn't see that Urokris was alive. Urokris had ended up on the ground like everyone else, and so the Grand Wizard thought he had killed him.
This finally activated Drixodal's senses. In his grief, realizing that he had killed his people, his citizens, his students, his staff in an effort to prove he was worthy of leading them, he broke down. He took his blade and, with it, his own life in the blaze of the Magic College Arena, as the New Year of 520 rang in.
The only survivor of the party was Urokris Erthar.
Aftermath
There were seven students who were first to respond to the scene. All were Draconians: Ikkul Ravofarn, Kicad Bavul,
Ilxar Nimphonker, Yernok Caerxan,
Onkesh Tazwunak, and
Tarthekar Padorim. Leading them was the eldest amongst them: Otikul Nurdesh.
All of these men were, like Urokris, considered the future of the Draconian Villages. Most, aside from Tarthekar, were lined up to be Chief, but Tarthekar would end up being the first to achieve the title. Only Otikul was a Chief already at the time of the tragedy.
Olifla Darelor by Jarhed
These seven students scoured the wreckage for any survivors. Tarthekar and Ilxar tried to heal the victims only to find that it was too late. Kicad tried to send a message about what had happened. Yernok found his lover, cradling her corpse that he was hardly even able to see.
It was Otikul Nurdesh that found Urokris Erthar, still alive. But he said little, as Ikkul came in and made sure Urokris was okay. In the war that Urokris had led, Ikkul learned to heal. And so, he used everything he had to heal Urokris. But even as it healed his wounds, Ikkul's magic only brought back the trauma of what Urokris had just witnessed. Flames... they seared against his skin, as if telling him:
"It's your fault. All of them died because of you."
Urokris lashed out, but if there was anyone able to keep him from hurting anyone, including himself, it was Ikkul and Otikul. They held him down and talked with him as more people arrived to see the scene.
A song began to play. The Grand Wizard Requiem... the fourth year known as
Olifla Darelor had composed it upon seeing the sight, to express the grief of both Drixodal Vortrin and Urokris Erthar.
Upon hearing it in the future, Urokris would always collapse into tears. It was a reminder of what he had suffered and how he had failed.
Olthash Bifaeth by fyrcracker
A relief effort began to grow around Draconian Territory, with everyone with interest in healing, mental health, history, and politics arriving to help the survivor and witnesses cope with the tragedy.
First, the time-traveling historian Workris Galkan intervied Urokris. He said they would meet again one day, but most of all he wanted Urokris's immediate thoughts on the tragedy.
Olthash Bifaeth Mardaar was the one to then sit down and counsel Urokris. She helped him deal with his emotions, and suggested that he get far away from this scene. That instead, he travel the world, get new experiences. This idea was exactly what he needed, and so he left.
The 520 Massacre sent shockwaves through Draconian Territory. Everyone alive at that time knows where they were when they heard of it. Almost everyone that saw the scene was changed on a fundamental level, their ideologies changing largely to wish that nothing like this ever happened again, by any means necessary. Many believed it would be the end of the Grand Wizard title in general, the final nail in the coffin.
Urokris didn't want it. He couldn't possibly take it. He thought the title was rotten, and thanks to a conversation with Otikul, he believed the world would be better without it.
The
Noble Council did not agree with this. They took this as an opportunity to seize power by appointing their Noble Head, Thalmejis Durzire, to the position. It is said that aside from Durzire himself leading the campaign, it was
Drorthod Lormorn's suggestion that Durzire take the position. That the Noble Council fix Vortrin's mess.
A man named Linfire offered him a job at the World Court, but Urokris refused.
The final thing he heard as he left Draconian Territory was that Ikkul was grieving Urokris's potential and power, now training his own fire to be more potent, in honor of his friend and to make sure it wouldn't happen again. In the future, Urokris would grieve this more than anything, because his own tragedy caused Ikkul to create the
Tsar Bomba.

Travels
Urokris traveled the world. He had a desire to find something better out in the world, something that would help him. Ultimately, while he did find this, he found himself lost in the beauty of nature and civilization all around the globe.
First, he went to
Alzirgos and the cities on the western coast like
Vitroveil, then heading to the Dwarven Kingdom where he learned how weapons are forged.
Next was the Elven Kingdom, where they did not accept him very readily. It was only thanks to some Elves who studied at the College and could vouch for Urokris that he was allowed to stay for a time.
He then visited the remainder of the Kingdom of Man, followed by the
Jihdi Empire. He experienced the cultures of all these distant lands, so different from the Draconians that had ruined his life. He did not spend long in the
Ophidian city of Bang Kruthiwat, as the city is always on fire.
He then retreated to a mountain in the
Uncharted Desert. A mountain that no one in that age had been able to climb:
The Celestial Palace.
It was a dangerous trek, but he was able to deal with it better than anyone. There, he trained with the Verthica Draconians and their Zhi Scholars, most notably Huo Zhi, a woman best skilled in Fire Magic. He would be the last person who came from outside of the Celestial Palace to see her before she died some two years later.
He also met and studied with the other Zhis, particularly Guang Zhi and Heise Zhi, the two leading Zhis of the era, as well as someone who began to grow and study a technique alongside Urokris: Diqu Zhi.
Urokris and Diqu both had a strong internal rage, but together they were able to develop techniques for controlling that rage and using it for good rather than letting it destroy them. The most notable technique here was the Rage Crystal.
Miyake Miyako by Jarhed
It was atop the Celestial Palace that Urokris learned of the
Ilder Massacre, and the death of Olthash Bifaeth Mardaar. The person who set him on the right path had suffered a tragic fate like everyone else he knew. Part of him wanted to return, to console her son and husband and help them from developing the rage he did. But he had promised her to travel the world. He still needed to go to the other continents.
Urokris left the Celestial Palace a more calm, collected, and peaceful man. He had no intention of starting or being part of a war ever again. All he wanted now was peace. This was where he gained the Draconian Nickname: The Pacifist.
His trip to
Shafai was more about communing with nature and spending time with the Fairies, as the Zavese did not wish for him to stay very long, and the Shafaians feared his flames.
He trained swordsmanship in the
Abral Islands with Miyake Miyako and other Kamejin swordsmen. He wanted to learn the techniques so that he could combat them and hopefully understand all kinds of war so that, perhaps, he could end them.
In the
Lizardfolk cities, he personally confronted the
Dragon Lord Reoma the Wretched, stopping him from attacking the city. He convinced Reoma that this battle would not be fruitful. It is said Reoma mostly left because he knew he could just come back later, but still many saw this as Urokris preventing a war.
Shatlita Gunn by Jarhed
He then was able to stop an army of Orcs from invading with his words as well, convincing them to turn back. There was only one Orc who was hesitant to listen: a young
Shatlita Gunn, the Monster of Urd Grabad, alongside her companions
Roref Moondancer Gunn and Kennedy Ramone. She was a legendary warrior who did not see a reason to stop fighting. But Urokris convinced her to begin searching for more. She had a son,
Shatt Gunn, not long after.
Monster by Jarhed
In the
Korvian City, Urokris met a man named Monster, who tried to use Urokris's trauma against him and turn Urokris into a creature that would do Monster's bidding.
Urokris was able to defy Monster, who at the time was still growing his powerbase, and even managed to steal the Korvian Bag of Gold that symbolized Monster's status in Korvian society.
Now, Urokris had it, and by the laws of Korvian society, this meant that Urokris was a noble. No matter how he gained it, a rich man was rich nonetheless.
He had also gained a sizable wealth from his trip, and was able to charter a ship from the
Mammen back to
Elone from
Udai. His intention was to return to the World Court and accept Linfire's offer as long as it would be peaceful.
Grand Wizard Salasar Feaphed by Jarhed
Professor at the Magic College
There were other plans in place, however. The 64th Grand Wizard,
Salasar Feaphed, was watching Urokris's journey closely. He wanted to help give Urokris a stable life again, and so he flew and landed on Urokris's ship as it crossed the
Strait of Ildial.
Salasar helped steer it out of the storms and began to chat with Urokris. At first, it was friendly. Urokris knew of the famed Scholar and member of the Mage Trio. He had met him quite often in the libraries and chatted with Feaphed.
When Urokris heard Salasar say he was the Grand Wizard, however, Urokris grew bitter towards his old friend.
"You come to me with good tidings while you carry the knife that ripped my heart in two... leave my sight. I want no part in whatever tragedy you'll cause."— Urokris Erthar
Salasar, however, did not leave. He promised Urokris that he had no intention of hurting him. Instead, he had a job offer. He wanted Urokris to be a Professor at the Magic College, to teach a new generation how to avoid the pitfalls he had fallen into. Salasar said he trusted Urokris as a teacher more than anyone, and that he would pay him whatever salary he wanted.
Grolcurth Hellglory by Jarhed
However, there was one caveat. Urokris would serve as a
Magic History Professor and, therefore, be given the job of Chronicling Salasar Feaphed's reign as Grand Wizard. This meant he would need to work one-on-one with the Grand Wizard every day learning about him.
Urokris considered declining the offer for a time, until he found out that Otikul Nurdesh, who had been of great comfort to Urokris, was also a Professor there. Otikul convinced Urokris to use this to find Salasar's weaknesses, exposing him as a fraud so they could take down the Grand Wizard title once and for all.
Urokris grew close to Otikul, and they would have a tea session every day where they grew closer.
The other person that Urokris grew close with was his co-teacher: Grolcurth Hellglory. Grolcurth had suffered a similar tragedy to Urokris in the year 530 and, therefore, they were able to bond over this.
The Class of 545
However, the two would suffer various tragedies with their first official class that they brought to the end: The Class of 545. Urokris had finished teaching the Class of 541 upon his return, but this was the first Class he taught from the beginning.
It was a disaster. On their first outing, four students died and would be replaced. Throughout the next four years, the students would grow disillusioned and many more would die. The graduating class ended up being 8 students: half of the initial class.
Grolcurth was hopeful, but Urokris grew distant. He wanted to fix this. He needed to fix this.
Sinner Caerxan by Jarhed
The Class of 549
And that change began with their next class. Strangely enough, with a ruffian known as
Sinner.
Urokris knew that Sinner was Monster's son. In large part, this made Urokris resent Sinner, but aside from that, he wanted to help Sinner to grow and hopefully stop his father.
Upon inviting him to tea, Sinner stole Urokris's bag of Korvian Gold, which he had stolen from Sinner's family. Urokris was not immediately aware, but ultimately he learned of it and just hoped that Sinner would use it for good.
But Sinner would be part of the first tragedy of this class. Sinner,
Nalrik Tilrak,
Tothra Staz,
Imvis Valhana, and Silentium would fight against the
Cragspear Bandits, getting their classmate Turbine killed.
Urokris then helped get the new replacement,
Vodron Susk, into the class. He tried not to grieve, but he still did, even while he guided Vodron. Grolcurth was closer to Vodron, but still Urokris wanted to help him.
Nalrik Tilrak by Jarhed
Then there was Nalrik Tilrak, the son of Fepar Tilrak and adopted son of Ikkul Ravofarn.
Urokris had mixed feelings about Nalrik, due to how Ikkul had grown to declare many wars in his time as Chief and Urokris worried he may have raised Nalrik to do the same.
Still, Nalrik was a kind man and seemed to want peace more than war. Urokris tried to coach this part of the young Tilrak.
Ultimately, Urokris would lead a group of these students on a raid of the Cragspear Bandits fortress, healing those who were injured and making sure they would not be killed. This group included Nalrik Tilrak, Sinner, Vodron Susk, Silentium, Tothra Staz, Imvis Valhana, and Expressive Mastema.
Urokris would then be stuck in the Birdcage around Zephys during the
Chief Crisis, a war started by all of the people who had arrived to save him from the 520 Massacre.
The biggest aggressor was none other than Ikkul Ravofarn, who had taken Nalrik Tilrak and Imvis Valhana as interns. All of his students were interning for someone in this war, and Urokris feared that they would not come back alive.
Salasar Feaphed confirmed these fears, saying it had been prophecied that at least one student in the Class of 549 would die, and so they had found a replacement. Urokris was hesitant until he met the replacement:
Oraakil Mardaar. The son of Olthash.
Oraakil Mardaar by fyrcracker
Urokris saw that Oraakil had a deep rage in his heart, and Urokris feared what that could become, especially seeing the power and potential that Oraakil had. Oraakil reminded Urokris of himself not just because of his rage, but because of his background and training.
In a way, if an unstoppable man like Salasar Feaphed were not Grand Wizard, Urokris could have imagined Oraakil having the same people backing him that had backed Urokris's bid for Grand Wizard.
Urokris, however, did everything he could to coach Oraakil away from that as well. He did not want another Grand Wizard. He wanted a strong leader who didn't need a legacy title as a crutch. He wanted a man who could move past his rage for a better future. He staked that future in Oraakil Mardaar, because Urokris feared Ikkul's influence on Nalrik Tilrak.
Ultimately, Urokris would participate in the Battle of the Birdcage, fighting back the forces of Tamd by coaching the Class of 550 and imprisoning any enemy commander that wasn't killed.
Particularly, he shadowed Shatt Gunn through the battle, hoping to see that Shatlita had listened to his advice. She had, and Shatt had to save her because she had given up battling to raise her son to surpass her. Urokris was pleased at this, and helped Shatt to arrest the drug dealer known as Klenkian Ravoslar.
Lorakaen Darelor, however, was someone Urokris had no love for. Not only because of her mother Olifla, but because upon meeting Urokris, Lorakaen played the Grand Wizard Requiem. She didn't know, but intentions are not what matter. It is action, and so Urokris largely ignored Lorakaen, as he did with many others in the Class of 550 because of that.
Vodron Susk by Jarhed
It was the following year that Urokris would take his students to the Northern Islands to see the ruins of Lorev for their study abroad.
Few students ended up actually coming. Oraakil Mardaar, Veladiel, Silentium, Zaud Foot Marauder, and
Caddos Damolnath were the only ones to actually show, and the first two abandoned them for some strange quest.
Urokris found that the others intended to do diplomacy and, while he wanted to help, he had another arrangement. They dropped him off in
Saumart for the wedding of Vodron Susk, which he happily attended. He wanted to see Vodron grow, and saw this in how his student now carried himself.
A battle broke out here, but Urokris was happy to see his students handle it well. Of course, Vodron was one of the leading figures here, but another stand-out for Urokris was Jargar Eltan, a Draconian nobleman, student of Urokris's, and good friend of Vodron's.
Jargar calmly led the guests to the exits and to a safe area while taking care of those that would harm them and showing that people need to be helped in times of crisis and that one cannot think of themselves. He was another leader that the Draconian people needed.
Urokris was happy to learn see, two years later, that it would be these five students he had kept his eyes on that would sit at the top of the class: Vodron, Nalrik, Sinner, Jargar, and Oraakil.
The future was in good hands. And it was finally time.
Otikul Nurdesh by Jarhed
The Coup of Zephys
It was not Urokris that began the plan, though he had mapped it all out and created it. Otikul Nurdesh, his co-conspirator, had done the preparations and revealed the assassination attempt on Salasar Feaphed's life.
However, it was Urokris that surprised Salasar by fighting. Urokris was a pacifist, but he would fight for a better future against a man whose very existence opposed Urokris's beliefs. He would make sure the Grand Wizard title would die.
Urokris had been given a Korvian Ability by the man known as Etcher, which allowed him to remove the ability to use magic from anyone whose bones he was able to break. He did this to Salasar, saying to Feaphed:
"You aren’t the Grand Wizard anymore… now you aren’t even a Wizard. You’re just a man…”— Urokris Erthar
To Urokris's surprise, however, Salasar was not upset at this. He had been fighting for 150 years and had wanted to leave a better future for the Draconian people and the world. If this was what they chose, he was fine with it. After all, Salasar trusted Urokris. So he just responded to Urokris by saying:
“That’s all any of us are. If we were Grand Wizard, if we almost were, or if we never were. We’re all just men.”— Salasar Feaphed
Urokris was shocked. It took everything in him to not stop there, as he saw the good man that Salasar Feaphed truly was. But he knew, as well, that this needed to happen. Salasar had good, but so too did he have evil in his heart. All men did. And Urokris was the only one who could stop him.
And so, Urokris wrapped his arms around the weakened Salasar Feaphed, and began using his ash magic to incinerate himself and Salasar together. To die and end the troubles of the title they both were given. To end the Grand Wizard Struggle by removing all Grand Wizards from the world. To atone for the mistakes that had gotten Urokris's friends killed.
“Let the Grand Wizard Struggle begin the way it ended… from one Grand Wizard to another, let us die together in its pyre!”— Urokris Erthar
But Urokris never got to die in that pyre. Urokris never was allowed to atone for what he had witnessed.
Otikul Nurdesh used his capture magic, saying he still needed Urokris, keeping him in a pocket dimension where he could not be hurt, could not die, and could not atone. Where he was always stuck as he was. Urokris Erthar was trapped in a dimension where he was left with himself to think of how he had failed.
Information
Sexuality
Urokris Erthar was never known to have a partner, but upon being interviewed by Workris Galkan, Erthar revealed many secrets. For one, he was bisexual and had been with both men and women. He had sired three children: two in Draconian Territory and one on the
Celestial Palace. After he returned to the Magic College and began teaching, he settled down with a man named Clurnal Arrakas, who passed away in the Chief Crisis. After that, Urokris remained alone for the remainder of his life.
Phrixus by Jarhed
Religion
When Urokris Erthar was born, he followed Phrixus like any devout Bortanni would. However, as time passed and he grew more disillusioned, Otikul Nurdesh convinced him that Helle would be able to help him more than Phrixus could. After the 520 Massacre... Urokris believed this wholeheartedly.
It was only after being betrayed by Otikul later that Urokris made peace with Phrixus once more, ultimately deciding to return to his roots to protect others like he always should have done.
Physical Condition
Urokris was generally in peak physical condition for most of his life, up until the Coup of Zephys's aftermath where his body began to crack and break apart into ash and flames.
Wealth
Urokris was quite wealthy, amassing many artifacts and such from around the world, such as the Korvian Bag of Gold.
Social Life
Urokris did not have many close friends. The only ones he had for most of his adult life after returning to the Magic College were other Professors. He would always have tea time with Otikul Nurdesh, and he would listen to Vardid Liloryas's concerts and return Zanni Laithra safely to his bed whenever his narcolepsy kicked in.
His best friend was likely his fellow Professor of his classes: Grolcurth Hellglory. Grolcurth had suffered a similar, self-inflicted tragedy that had killed his own entire class as well, so the two bonded. Upon the Grand Crowning, Grolcurth felt betrayed and abandoned by Urokris, but Urokris had committed the act to make sure that would never happen again. More than anything, Urokris wants to apologize to Grolcurth for betraying him.
Abilities
Urokris Erthar was one of the greatest combatants of his era, and at his peak he had combat prowess that rivaled even
Captain Commander Narkard. His intellect, too, was always ranked among the best, and his problem solving skills and strategic mind paired with a kind heart made him stand out.
Magic
Urokris Erthar once was a fire mage with incredibly potent flames. However, after the 520 Massacre, his fire died and it turned to ash. The ash was even stronger, but it hurt him to use and had more drawbacks and danger, as it was representative of how his body believed that the incredible power he had only ended up hurting himself and everyone he cared for and causing the 520 Massacre.
