Bleeding the Head

A minor celebratory tradition for a trapper's first official kill on the job.

Origin

The tradition is common among trapper guilds rather than freelancing trappers. Junior trappers new to the trade, usually 'Pups', who've been recruited under a company or guild will tend to lack true experience in the field.   Bleeding the head is an unofficial form of graduation, allowing the new recruit a metaphorical 'notch in their belt'. It's also a learning experience, allowing new trappers to understand the mindset needed for this profession.   Bleeding the head may have come from an early superstition to always destroy the back of a Wendigo's head; else it will rise and attack you again.   This superstition spread to become a necessary measure for any paranormal entity. Finishing off any wounded beast via a knife or gunshot into its head (back of the head if preserving its face).   The phrase 'bleeding the head' is satirical to the common phrase 'wetting the head'; celebrating the birth of a baby by drinking alcohol.

Tradition

During a hunting party, If a new recruit manages to down or tag a beast, they're encouraged to finish off that creature.   A stab or direct shot to its head will confirm the kill. This will often be followed by any spectators at the time excitedly congratulating them.   To celebrate, the tradition may vary. From as simple as a round on the house at a saloon, to a celebration on par with a birthday. Regardless, A known trapper who lost his 'monster-hunting virginity' will receive a form of an appraisal.   On some occasions, the trapper would eat the heart of their kill. It's a native tradition that's rumored to gift the strength and prowess of the beast to the hunter. Other forms of this tradition may include cooking and eating the flesh, or taking a token from its body.
" A woke with a roaring headache and dried mouth. Surrounded by passed out patrons and partygoers.   I vividly remember the first drink I had last night, but started to fade off after the sixth.    These guys really go all out on this 'bleeding the head' thing.     Looking back, I think might have just shot a regular dog."
- Andy Cunningam, Junior Trapper 1875
