Buxton, North Dakota
One of the earliest towns established in the Pembina area of North Dakota. Originally a trading settlement for furs now became a stronghold against invading natives and monsters
History
Buxton was established in 1801 by fur traders from the North West Company. Settling next to Red River for easier entrapment of local beavers and wildlife in need of a water source. Prior, many other European trappers attempted to camp in the area, only lasting a few months before disappearing. The forming settlement bordered between the native territories of the Lokota and Chippewe. Though met with hostility at first, the neighbouring tribe began trading with the European settlers. Furs for supplies and firearms. Many anomalous threats like Ravagers, Doxils, and Baskers. The high walls of Buxton seemed inviting to many compromised tribes, often joining the settlement and adopting their customs. Few natives saw this action to be betraying their cultures, abandoning customs for safety. Through the years between 1802 to 1805, Lakotan warriors attempted raids numerous times to Buxton. The town fended off the threat. Their high log walls and height advantage allowed firearms to be crucially effective. Buxton has been used as a solace for many travellers heading to the west coast of the country. It's reputation spread across the land as one of the most secure settlements in the north. Though getting in requires dodging the many threats outside, some risk anxiety just to have one reassured rest without something looming behind their back at all times.Architecture
The town comprises of multitude of log cabins that surround the Red River. These cabins are of high quality, mainly used to escape the cold stinging winds of the north. Materials are all sourced within the local area. Often deforesting trees and moving dirt. The high walls that cover the perimeter of Buxton are made with matured logs staked into the ground. Reinforced with clay from the local river to prevent sagging. These walls are fitted with a platform to allow surveillance and advantage during conflicts. Small makeshift bridges help traverse divets and the river, though try not to obstruct the use of small boats for fishing and travelling upstream.Industry and Trade
The entire settlement relies on trading to keep the economy running. Fur pelts and monster parts are sought as high-value assets. But other commodities like salt, wheat, clothes, and tools are desperately in high demand. Due to the continuous beratement of vicious wildlife and Indian raids, Buxton has been often avoided by travellers in recent years. Though Buxton has never been compromised and raided by a threat, most traders tend not to take the risk.Consolidated Mining Company headquarters, ca. 1895 by Unknown Photographer
