Magic

There are many kinds of magic in the world but academically speaking, it is most frequently divided into two groups: higher magic and lesser magic. The higher is considered more science like, and consists of 5 schools of practise and all of them have their own magical colleges. The lesser one is the kind Faes and other supernatural beings make. You can clearly tell this is a human concept, but that's for another discussion entirely.
The 5 schools of magic are as follows:

1. Star magic (Astromancy, fortunetelling and time magic.)
2. Fire magic (Candlemagick, healing and practical magic.)
3. Storm magic (Electricity and magic usage in modern technology.)
4. Chroma magic (Illusions, decostruction and veil magic.)
5. Dark magic (Balance and consequences.

Each has their own creation myth explaining the inner workings of the universe, their patron saint and certain basic spells and techniques that are characteristic and unique for each school. It is not possible to combine two schools together because they are mutually exclusive.
To which magical school a gifted individual will belong to gets confirmed during an initiation ritual - that is more of a fancy ceremony and does not really serve a practical purpose as the vast majority of the magically inclined know in their heart what exactly is hidden in their soul. Your school of magic depends on how you feel about light in general, because from light comes all magic. The date and hour of ones birth also tend to influence this quite a bit.
And because magic is basically light of weird frequencies generally invisible to naked (human) eye but capable of cool stuff, there are of course special glasses and lenses being manufactured to help see it.
While the gift of magic itself runs in the family and is supposed to been tied to bloodlines (at least in human cases) the affinity for a certain school doesn't - it really depends on one's soul more than anything else. It's about what kind of light speaks to you the most, where you find comfort, what you believe in and what fascinates and drives you forward. Or whether your mind is more focused on the shadows. Because there will always be more of the darkness than the light. Just look up at the Universe and it will answer to you the same.

Manifestation

The basic component of magic is light or lack there of, but sometimes it operates on such frequencies that the eyes cannot see it. All magic has also a certain smell to it which some people are able to recognise.
