Free Cities

The free cities were a loosely affiliated set of city states to the south east of Balri.

History

The cities included:

• Telverin.
• Oskalen.
• Nanolli.
• Ixhin.
• Juviendar.

Though fiercely competitive amongst themselves, the threat posed by Balri convinced them to form a mutual defence pact. Named after the place it was signed the Yneska treaty committed the states to supply troops and gear for a shared force that would defend the cities to the north-west. Juviendar formed the core of this defence and though it's walls were breached several times by the Balrian forces they were unable to fully capture the city during the first age.
Matters changed when the Alliance was formed and Balri no longer had to worry about Trem and Filishar. Finally able to commit all of their forces, the Balrian army laid siege to Juviendar. The city capitulated after 15 months and was quickly turned into a forward base from which to strike at the rest of the Free Cities. The remaining cities appealed to the mages council for help, and the through the efforts of the Lord-High Magus were admitted into the Alliance. Though protected from being conquered through military might, this didn't stop the Balrian government from exerting more subtle pressure on the cities. As part of the deal reached between Balri and the other members of the alliance, Juviendar was formally recognised as part of Balri rather than one of the Free cities.
