Sigils/Runes
Sigils and Runes are symbols that concentrate Magical Power into a single area. There are 11 Major Schools of Magic - most with several Sub-Schools within them - and each has a Sigil/Rune associated with the School. Sigils and Runes can be used in a variety of ways; this includes containing a spell, writing a magic scroll and enchanting objects. Sigils and Runes are often required for more complex spells (with even those who participate in Somaticism often tracing the outline of a Sigil/Rune). They start off with a basic design - often derived from the School's base Sigil/Rune - but as a spell becomes more complex, so too will the Sigil/Rune. In fact, some particularly detailed Runes/Sigils have been found and are so detailed that they have presumably taken months if not years for an individual to have completed them.
Sigils and Runes are only differentiated by how they're made; Sigils are made by painting onto a surface, while Runes are made by digging into it.
