Sabie
Demographics
Sabie is almost entirely human but the Bah Leu district is home exclusively to ethnically Jia humans. The rest of the city is of mostly Aulan descent.
Industry & Trade
Sabie is the oldest settlement in New Vandelle and was chosen because of its shoreline and ample supply of lumber. The city is the only real port city in New Vandelle, meaning nearly all the trade of the colony comes through there. The lumber industry and port trade employ the vast majority of Sabeurs.
History
Sabie was the first colonial city of Aulette in Waihohn. It was from here that the kingdom of Aulette sent out settlers to the rest of modern day New Vandelle. The Bah Leu district is one of the oldest parts of Sabie, originally built as an open air prison. Since the founding of the city, the wall facing the ocean has come down and the gates are more often unlocked, but many still consider Bah Leu a prison for the Jia people of Sabie.
Sabie holds an important role in New Vandelle to this day, both as its primary port and its main source of lumber. The redwoods that grow in the area are so large that cutting down one supplies enough lumber to build an entire galleon. These trees were what drew the first Aulan settlers to the area and the number of trees is still high enough that the industry shows no sign of slowing. Redwood has become a defining feature of New Vandelle architecture and design.
Sabie has a history of falling victim to the crimes of Arnaud's Bastards, a pirate crew who operate from a peninsula called Freedom Point which lies just around the cape from Sabie. The pirates are a nuisance who have disrupted much of the trade in Sabie but the Aulan navy is stretched thin fighting uprisings in Jia. The people of New Vandelle and Sabie in particular grow weary of Aulette's inability to deal with the rash of piracy plaguing their livelihoods.
