Summary
A practitioner of Rinzai Buddhism who was orphaned at a young age to grow up in Ankokuji Temple at Aki Province. Ekei, who took the temple's name in place of a surname he never knew, is a solemn and serious man who values self-control and temperance above all else. As a follower of Rinzai, he believes that true insight into one's own identity is the only path to enlightenment. Although their origins are vastly different, these practices put Ekei in a sympathetic position with the Hannya Sūhai and, through them, the rulers of Aki Province: the Mōri Clan. His social skills are not notable and many find Ekei too quiet and serious for their tastes. His uncanny insight into his self can be turned to others, however, leading to a school of diplomacy focused on discerning the political weaknesses of others. Most recently, Ankokuji Ekei is credited with the nonlethal conquest of Iyo Province, where he has served since with Katsura Mototada, whose abilities complement his own.
