Grand Yamana Observatory

Nexus of Natural Science

Summary A grand marvel of modern Japanese science and inquiry. Built and funded by the Yamana Clan Daimyō, Yamana Toyokuni, the Grand Yamana Observatory is the greatest known telescope, laboratory, and library in Japan. Toyokuni's researchers work closely with emissaries from the Imperial Court Archives to map the heavens, study natural phenomena, and unlock the secrets of life.   Although science and religion do not traditionally go hand in hand, the Grand Yamana Observatory does boast a divine patron. The Goddess of Nature and Animals, Ame-no-HIboko, has offered the Yamana Clan her protection in these turbulent times so that the laboratory may continue their pursuit of natural sciences. It is the goddess' will that greater understanding between man and nature will lead to greater harmony in turn. It is no coincidence that a great sandalwood tree rises from behind the Observatory, marking Izushi-jinja where Ame-no-Hiboko's earthly body dwells.
