Kyūso

Rodent Yōkai

Upon reaching a suitably mature age and spiritual power, an ordinary mouse or rat may transform into a Kyūso, or rodent yōkai. Although not physically powerful, Kyūso are renowned for their bravery and spirit. Perhaps that burning soul has been there all along in every mouse. Only once in yōkai form can it finally be realized.   There are many tales in Japan of farmers who purchased a cat to deal with a particularly big rat, only to find that cat killed or driven off by a Kyūso. These yōkai do not fear cats, but neither are they entirely hostile toward their old foes. Some stories tell of Kyūso who fall in love with cats or raise kittens as their own children. As one might expect, their relationships with Bakeneko are particularly complicated.   In terms of temperament, Kyūso are usually cool-headed and thoughtful. A lifetime of caution as a rat has taught them to wait and observe before making any important decisions. Every Kyūso seems to have a vice, however. For some, it's cheese. More common is coin. These yōkai are often thought of as greedy and grubbing, but in truth this usually represents a single blind spot in their otherwise temperate nature.
