The Sunken City
Coralline Metropolis
A thalassic metropolis beneath the waves of the Dreamsea. The Sunken City is enormous, spanning nearly the entire visible seafloor between Baharna and Dylath-Leen. For most sailors of the Dreamlands, it's landmark and a familiar curiosity. Something to look at beneath the crystal waves while on a long voyage. Nobody seems to know, however, how old the city is or how it came to be beneath the waves.
Two major theories exist on this last point. First is that the Sunken City was once a nation above the waves. A cataclysm, perhaps the hubris of the residents, or perhaps the ever-shifting landscape of the Dreamlands themselves, then took it beneath the waves like the mythical Earth city of Atlantis. In such an event, most of the metropolis' residents must surely have drowned, which accounts for the dearth of information on its history today.
The second theory is that the Sunken City was always underwater. Peopled by a sapient, water-breathing folk, or perhaps even by Zoog, it was built on the Dreamsea's floor and remains there even today. Of course, this theory does not explain what happened to the now-deserted city's inhabitants or why no record of them seems to exist. Still, certain evidence exists to support the theory. Consider the sweeping, oceanic motifs present in much of the architecture, or the way certain buildings seem designed to accommodate the flow of water. What's more, those who have visited the Sunken City personally can attest: it's not quite as empty as it seems from the surface...
