Beard beads
Beard beads are a common way for dwarves to express their individuality. It is culturally accepted for all genders to grow their beard and adorn it with these colorful beads. Beween the endless combinations of color, placement and amount of beads, some configurations are used to convey hidden messages about ones intentions or identity to those observant enough to notice.
Mechanics & Inner Workings
Beads are attached to a beard with a braiding technique that any barber who has ever treaded a dwarf is familiar with. Those that prefer less or shorter facial hair, might weave beads in their coiffure.
Significance
The many possible configurations of ones beard and their beads allow for a display of a multitude of hidden messages. In inns and pubs, beads might be used to express preferences in partners. In Clearwen, it is common for members of the thieves guild to identify themselves by their beads. The newest codes change regulalry and are distributed based on status wihtin the guild (left: orange-red-green, right: blue-red-green might signify). Mercenaries looking for particularly off-the-radar jobs denote their intentions by carrying five beads in various shades of green.
Some of the more intricately made beads or beads from rare materials are considered jewelry. These might be gifted upon special occasions, such as engagements or weddings. It is common for wedded partners to wear at least one matching bead. Valuable beads are considered a significant part of an inheritance.
Rarity
Rarity and pricing of beads are very dependent on the base material and level of craftmanship. Simple painted stone beads are commonly found, whereas gemstones or golden beads can be thought of as high end jewelrey.
