Actions

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one creature. Hit: 5 (1d6 + 2) piercing damage, and the niata attaches to the target. While attached, the niata doesn't attack. Instead, at the start of each of the niata's turns, the target loses (2d6 + 3) piercing damage plus (2d6) poison damage due to blood loss. The niata heals for the same amount as the poison damage.   The niata can detach itself by spending 5 feet of its movement. It does so after it drains 15 hit points of blood from the target or the target dies. A creature, including the target, can use its action to attempt to detach the niata with a DC 15 Strength check.

A medium size river snake that latches onto its predators and can latch onto water vessels.

Suggested Environments

Water (rivers only because of Salt Susceptibility).

Basic Information

Anatomy

This creature’s body is eel-like, with an even number of fins and a monstrous head. The number of fins denotes its order in the pack. The more fins, the higher the status of a Niata. It’s head consists of five tentacles which can force a prey into the digestive zone after passing three layers of razor sharp teeth. Niatas will slowly change their color to match that of their pack. The largest pack in the Northern Innlands is colored purple and red. An adult niata can grow up to 5 meters in length.

Ecology and Habitats

Niatas prefer to hunt in rivers, as it has a faster change in prey. Breeding is preferred in the stiller water of a lake.

Dietary Needs and Habits

This creature will hunt any other creature with a heartbeat that dares to find itself in its territory. Hunting is often executed in a pack consisting of 3-10 niagas. Other than humanoids and the odd dragon, no other creatures are known to hunt the niata. And for both of these enemies it is true that they hunt not for food, as niagas can be quite poisonous, but to rid a territory of these creatures when they are deemed too many.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Niatas are notoriously shortsighted, but makes up for this lack of sight by a vert efficient echolocation. Niatas are best hunted from the shore, as the echolocation is mostly effective under water. As a result, Niatas prefer to stay on the bottom and in the middle of a river.
Conservation Status
The niata is viewed as a nuisance by many river fishers. If not hunted often enough, it will endanger all aquatic life in its habitat.
