"Come here, Greggi."
Gregek pulled away his gaze from the clothes, rations and backpack laid out on the bed.
"What is it, mom?"
She was sitting in her favourite chair, from which she liked to gaze out of the only window in the house. Watching and waiting until the enemy came. Gregek had spent countless evenings sitting next to her, retelling battle stories.
"I'm afraid you'll have to make some more room in your backpack darling."
She pointed at a package, wrapped in cloth, that was covering the entire table. It was so large, Gregek was surprised the wonky side table underneath hadn't collapsed. He sat down next to her and looked at her questioningly. She nodded, and looked at the package with a big grin on her face. Gregek was trying to put a smile on his own face, knowing very well that she must have spent too much. His face must have shown his thoughts.
"Just unpack it."
He lifted the package so the cloth slid off and he felt his jaw drop. In his hand was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen. He slid his left arm through the straps and immediately felt how perfectly balanced it was. Was he really holding something this valuable?
"Mom. How?"
"I'm going back to the mines, greggi. We both know it would happen eventually, when they get here. What else would they do with an old, but strong, buggy like me? At least this way, I can sleep at night knowing you are protected."
The image of the shining shield on his arm was disappearing fast as his eyes filled with tears from each word she spoke.

Significance

This shield was gifted to Gregek Gregekuuh Uletru, who is currently known as the god of war, determination and sacrifice: The Patriot. His mother's sacrifice made him so motivated in the war on his home planet that he quickly rose through the army ranks. He was chosen as champion to join the expedition on the The First Skystone.
