The struggle of good and evil

The concepts of good and evil, as well as the idea that those two are in a constant struggle for dominance, are often a cornerstone of fantasy worlds. There are constant wars between Gods vs Daemons vs Devils, or just the Light Side vs. the Dark Side.

Turian is not a place of either-or, black or white, nor is it a utopian place of acceptance and tolerance. Turian is intended as a "realistic" reality. There are evil people, even whole populations of evil people just as there are good ones but neither one is completely homogenous but very well could be.
Turian has to be seen and understood as a world where cliché can have a very true core.

The people of Turian are generally not concerned with understanding and tolerance. Often quite the opposite, they feel that their group should dominate or at least have more than other groups. They could be nationalists who do not care about race, species or other things "...as long as you are a Hojan you are a good guy."
They might be misandric, misogynistic, racist or even speciesist and all those other completely natural, "human" and today "hated" things. "Feytarii women are out to ensnarl all our men!"
The people in Turian have no problem with seeing a whole species or group or nation as evil and still acknowledge the existence of exceptions even if they will be VERY sceptical and suspicious towards any members.

Turian is on many fronts, in many places, a world of survival.
Surviving nature, a war, the next drought or the next flooding, whatever adversity fate throws your way, does make you wary of others and sharing your resources or your stocks is not always a good idea, it might spell death to you and yours.
A single person or group may be very altruistic but nations can never be so if they want to survive. Being good is the domain of individuals, just as being evil is. Nations just are. But both, the individual and the nation want to survive.

The following words can be found in Elugorion's book Thoughts on Existence.

"... have to make up your mind. However, I'd like to give some starting points for your thoughts.

  • good and evil is always a matter of perception, of cultural and personal values.
As an example: Servitude might be seen as evil in one culture, while in another one might see it as part of the natural order of things.
  • Acting bad, inappropriately, or against the law does not make something or someone evil. Evilness is a certain state of mind that, to others, goes against most fundamental beliefs.
Just look at this example: Killing an already-beaten enemy will be seen as an evil deed by some. It might be seen as inconsequential, compassionate or even required by others. The humans from the north consider it a grave insult to an enemy to spare his life. Indicating that he can never be a threat and that he is weak.
  • Many people think of evil behaviours as acting against certain laws or traditions, mostly against laws that make up the basis of their culture or society.

The Hierarch, Highpriest of Am'roth the enlightener has told us:
Of course today, after millennia of learning, we know much more about the world and have encountered numerous species of unredeemable evil just as we found nations worshipping foul gods and daemons, we are wiser and more civilized. We know better.
