Underwater Pen

There have been a number of Mermaids over the years that have attempted to teach their children to write. Most Southern Mermaids will do so, as they know it will help them on land. Many Northern Mermaids do not care as they prefer to have as little interaction with the land as they can. And who needs to write under the sea?   In the South, the Mermaids got over having to teach their children on land and decided that they would create some kind of writing device under the water. Although they could write in the sand on the seabed with a finger or stick, or carve into the coral that grew in abundance, the currents were unpredictable (when not being controlled), and they preferred not to desecrate the living things they lived in harmony with. So a few of the Mermaids started creating.    Using their jewellery and charm crafting skills, they came up with the underwater pen. They decided that they didn't want to leave lasting images under the sea, and therefore based their design on the use of magic to condense particular minerals in the ocean to create the lines needed for writing. Although it didn't negate the unpredictable currents, it at least allows the individual lines/letters to stay as one, as if drifted to a surface, will stay on that surface until eaten.    The particular nutrients sucked into the pen and stuck together through magic as ejected are the natural food source of a krill-like species found throughout the ocean of Turien. The time it takes the 'nutrient ink' to attract the krill varies from a few minutes to hours, but the magic holding the nutrients together makes it a small challenge for the krill to take apart and they may be there for a few days, even weeks.   The underwater pen needs to have the magic of a Mermaid to work. As the Mermaid injects their magic and directs the flow of nutrients to the pen, the pen will mix and 'glue' the nutrients together with the magic. This becomes the nutrient ink. To release the ink into a letter or line, a Mermaid just has to push the button on the pen to do so. This button is at the place where the thumb would rest, as held similar to a land pen, thus making an easy on-off button for the ejection of the nutrient ink.
