The Dream Mother
When the First Dream fell upon the sleeping world, young women from every culture and ethnicity had their dreams visited by a woman robed in stars with nebula-like wings sprouting from her back. Her hair shone with a black the color of the cosmos, wreathed in a silvery crescent moon; yet her smile was more dazzling than the brightest star. Since then, every Dream held by a Magical Girl has been visited in one way or another by the Dream Mother. Within each Dream recorded since, the Dream Mother has addressed each girl by her preferred name, indicating a deep and personal knowledge of the dreamer.
No one is really certain who, or even what, the Dream Mother is. Theories range from her being some sort of extra-dimensional entity to a manifestation of the collective will of humanity, from the personification of the cosmos to a straight up deity. To most, the distinction is less important than the powers that she bestows upon those she visits.
To a select few, all of these theories point to one conclusion: that the Dream Mother is worthy of worship. These followers of hers, collectively known as the Dream Children, venerate not only the Dream Mother but also the Magical Girls as her avatars on the material plane.
In the ensuing years after the First Dream, statues and other symbols of veneration have begun to spring up across Twilight City. While the Dream Children make up only a small fraction of the populace of the city, nearly every person recognizes the protection the Dream Mother has afforded them.
