Sapphirus

The capital of Aria, and the only western city that survived the abyssal purge.

Rising above the horizon like a beacon, the city of Sapphirus stands sihloetted against the rings that nearly caused it’s demise.

HISTORY

“We don’t know who or what built it- we found it’s ruins and decided, “well, this seems neat!” and moved in. It’s served us well ever since.”
— -a mildly confused scholar
Sapphirus, as far as it’s residents can tell, was built at some point centuries ago, promptly abandoned, and then inhabited again by refugees looking to escape the corruption spreading in the east. These refugees then banded together and created the country of Aria, dubbing Sapphirus as it’s capital.   Over the next few years, the country grew, and so did the capital. Slowly but surely, it developed into a flourishing city full of trade, innovation, and creativity. People from all over the coast came to visit, and Sapphirus welcomed them with open arms.

DURING THE PURGE

As the Abyssal Purge began, Sapphirus reinforced their defences, opened their doors, and offered shelter to anyone who needed it. Nobody knew how bad things were going to get, so it was best to prepare before things headed south. Well, further south than they already had.   After enduring the first few storms (the purge’s warning signs), Sapphirus was already struggling to keep their defenses running. The constant rain had nearly flooded the city’s lower levels more than once, and more than a few trees had their branches strewn across the city streets.
Nevertheless, they persisted. Those adept in controlling water pushed the floods back towards the ocean, experienced technicians kept upgrading the shields to block some the wind and rain, and scouts went on dangerous missions to neigboring villages to bring their inhabitants to safer locations.

Notable places in Sapphirus

Howling Cliffs
While techically not a part of the city, the howling cliffs have one of the most gorgeous views in the area. They're right by the edge of the city, so you can see the views from almost anywhere.
  The Dragon' bookshop
A small bookshop-cafe hybrid that is right near the heart of the city. It offered a bit of relief from the misery during the purge with it's endless stories.
