Shielding Stones

“I carefully charged the crystal, and the runes flared to life. A bright light surged through each stone, darting from one to the next and the one after that, until the shield hummed to life, hovering above my hand. It pulsed with a familiar light.
However, a few seconds later, the light flickered and the stones dropped to the floor. This prototype wouldn’t end up working, but that was when I realized: “Hey, this might actually work!”

Shielding stones are a defensive technology meant to protect people from magical threats. It originated as a simple magical shield, but was then upgraded to have some offensive capabilities as well. Now, they’re commonly used across Valyria, especially in places where monsters are more common or more aggressive.

DISCOVERY

They were originally invented by Ava Trace, a now-renowned inventor and artifact collector. She was still in school at the time, mostly studying magical sciences. She had dabbled in inventing before, but never more than small, personal projects. However, after a bad run-in with some monsters who appeared to be immune to physical attacks, Ava thought she’d try to make something to protect herself whenever her knife couldn’t.
After a ton of prototypes (apparently around 73), she finally got one that worked. Seven runestones, each tied to an anchor by magical thread. When activated, the threads weave toether into a web-like structure, with the seven stones floating at the edges.
The stones are still connected to the anchor, so when the anchor moves, so does the sheild.
It could also be converted into a whip-like weapon, with all of the threads tied together to make a sturdy rope with the runestones at the end. The stones themselves didn’t do much, but the magical rope could do some serious damage to any magical creature.
