Session 23

General Summary

Marty uses spider form to ferry people over the top of the cave roof to get to the eastern bank. On the other side the party find a beach with an iron gate displaying a scene of winged humanoids battling one another. Beyond the gate, two smokeless torches cast a ruby red glow over a great stone door. The door itself is decorated with the symbol of a metallic grey spiked crown within a golden circle. The number 13 is engraved in numerals at the top of the door in the same grey metal. Beside the door, on either side are angelic statues made from highly polished gold. To the left, a female angel in heavy armour stares down with a cold sneer holding her tower shield in front of her with her wings outstretched. To the right, an androgynous angel stands ready with an arrow nocked, staring out into the darkness as if ready to strike out at any who might approach.

Investigating the shielded angel reveals the shield to be removable suspended from the statue on a hinged arm. After investigating for traps both magical and mundane, Wisk and Felix remove the heavy gold shield from the hinge and the large stone door springs open. Beyond they hear the sound of gears starting into motion and the hum of magical power. As the pair move into the now opened chamber, a clockwork tower begins to fire on them. The room is filled with statues holding bronze disks at their base that seem to emanating alternating white and purple light. Wisk and Felix, still under fire hide behind the large golden shield they're holding and investigate the nearby mirrors to see if they can be moved but they can't. Next they try getting closer to the tower to drive a piton into its mechanisms and stop it from rotating which they manage. Helgret, Marty (in spider form) and Wisk help Felix up to the top of the tower and remove the power gem at the top.
The party then explore the rest of the room, finding on the eastern side, a dwarven puzzle door that will only open once the nearby braziers are lit. Piping from the braziers split off into the northern and southern walls. The party then begin exploring the nearby sidechambers and finds a series of levers. They find that flipping the levers causes the colour of the light to change on both sides of the corridor and, by getting the southern chamber to flip to the up postion, the lights on the south turn purple and a nearby door opens. This causes the northern side to turn all of it's light white and the corresponding chamber to fill with gas which Marty narrowly escapes.

The party follow the exposed corridor in the southern chamber down to its end, finding a a drape over an entrance to the next room, from underneath it could be seen skeletal remains. The party pull the remains through the drapes and find another arm coming through with it, clearly there are a lot of remains piled beyond the drapes. Marty took 10 minutes to cast Night Owl and send it in to scout ahead finding a veritable mound of humanoid bones close to the entrance of a large chamber. Searching the bones a polished grey blue stone with a strange symbol etched into it and another small pearlescent white stone with a carving depicting a wolf howling. The room is dominated by a raised dais, upon which sits a brazier with three large statues surrounding it. On the eastern wall is a large hole in the wall encased in a field of energy, beyond which is a swirling dark void. On the dais, two of the statues lie tumbled and smash upon the surface of the dais and one remains intact. Copper piping runs from the south wall in to the base of the dais before re-emerging and connecting to the brazier. In a ring around the dais are eight stone platforms with flat tops. The owl returns to the corridor and the party move in.

The party attempt to interact with the field of energy on the eastern wall and, after Lorelei fired a crossbow bolt at it, they hear a voice in their heads coming from something behind the field. The voice claimed to be a creature of the hells called Thekis the Black. It promised a service of their choice should they release it. During this exchange, Wisk approached the dais and celestial symbols appeared on the stone tops. Felix offered to release Thekis on the condition that it be sent back to the hells at the point of a sword. The devil refused and the party broke the seal to attack.

During the fight the Devil did substantial damage to Marty in bear form but after this, the party quickly surrounded Thekis and dispatched her. Looking around her 'prison' they find the bones of the person that summoned her and an silver medallion emblazoned with the symbol of Thenon - the Prince of Endless Sight - another one of the Fallen.
