Capacis Stilionis - The Living Carriage

A large salamander-type creature native to The Island of Tod and other south-hemisphere settlements. Often these creatures have a saddle or draw a carriage with them, making them a valuable mode of transportation especially to slightly inner-land settlements. These animals have smooth and slick skin, often wet with a type of mucus meant to protect them from insects and pests, and are tame by nature. While the animal itself provides the movement, it is the saddles or carriage itself that is considered the vehicle.   The carriage is fitted in a number of styles and purposes; the most common is the open-back made for traveling people, the fitted-closed for transporting large shipments, and the case design primarily used for farmers to transport produce. Because of this, seeing a carriage is often a good omen as well as a cause of celebration or happiness. This is especially true on market days, where kids are given an allowance and explore their local market in search of nick-knacks and sweet treats.    Another reason the carriages bring happiness is the significance, often-times only farmers or wealthy families own one as it is expensive to craft a carriage as well as owning and maintaining an animal large enough to carry it. It was a sight to see a domesticated creature, especially if it was part of a caravan.
Grateful
If you have ever seen my old writing notes or original comic sketches for project Grateful you may have seen a poorly designed version of this carriage. At the time I wasn't sure what creature or combination of creatures to base the driving animal by, nor did I know exactly how I wanted to design the carriage itself. In the sketches the result was a vague cow shape and a rectangular box, not my best work of course but I do plan on rendering a concept sheet with better alternate designs now that my skills have gotten better.
