Pilier de Vol - The Pillar of Flight

The Pillar

The pillar is used by residents for ceremonies of birth, death, and flight; noticeably in times of war or battle. Standing several stories tall, made with a brilliant light refracting stone to make enemies look away or harm their vision as a form of defense, each level holds a specific purpose, some more used than others.   In birth, the mother, newborn and family stay in the tallest level that is not the roof itself. This level is one singular room, every wall is covered with open-end windows that cannot be shut, and the access way is a stair door which can be blocked from the top if problems arise. It is said that as the wind blows through the room, the child's fate rests with nature. Heavy winds mean a strong flying, storm winds a stubborn one, no wind is a calm and level-headed one, and so on and so forth.   In death, the body of those who have passed are cleaned and taken care of in the same room as births, the family endures a ceremonial passage of grieving the entire embalming process. They go through ceremonial burning, marking themselves with symbols which reflect their relationship with the deceased; specific markings could describe if it was good, fair, poor, mother/child, father/child, cousins, other, sibling, spouse, friend, and more.   In wars or battles, the tower acts as a type of headquarters and also as a scout tower. Wounded warriors are treated religiously, recruits are trained, and information is kept within the walls. If an attack is imminent, the warriors spend a final night of celebration, with painted feathers and war-songs to build charisma and strength before the bloodshed and violence.
