On the Typical Reclaimer of Myridium

A serviceman (or servicewoman) of the Reclamation Corps. can be expected to be in peak physical condition, to look crisp and clean, to be honorable and brave, and to be fervently dedicated to Myridium and her struggles.   Reclaimers never renege on an oath and are honorable in all regards. Those not on the front lines will engage in a myriad of civil duties, from policing the markets to caring for sick and wounded. They are also the principle responders to emergencies in the city, mainly earthquakes and (gods forbid it) breaches in the outer defenses, usually from the northern ruins. Of course, not every reclaimer is out policing the streets at the same time. If that were so, the only danger left would be the stampedes of them rushing to help some pet out of a difficult space! No, the typical soldier shall spend but a fraction of his time patrolling the streets. Mostly, he shall be in the academy drilling, drilling, and drilling. This is followed by drilling, and then some drilling to top off the drilling. He shall be subjected to long hours of physical and mental strain to bolster his constitution. Life on the edge of the living city is quite dangerous. There must be no time at home for these honorable knights to soften.   Service in the Reclamation Corps. is for life. A reclaimer will hardly know the comforts of home after they leave for the training academy. For fresh recruits, a full cycle of the moon is spent doing nothing but training and preparing for life at the edge of the city. During this training, each recruit will be observed by veterans of the Reclaimer Corps. The veterans will decide what posts each recruit may qualify for, allowing the initiate to select his post at the end of training. I have had the fortune of witnessing some of the training that these recruits must endure. It is one of the most brutal and efficient programs that has ever been implemented in our time. One recruit who I met just before she reported to the academy was nigh unrecognizable when I spotted her a few weeks later. The only thing that remained of her former self was her face and her attire. The attitude of a recruit will change drastically, as they become hardened to a more difficult sort of life and realize their grim purpose.   After they have received their first training, they will be sent to the front lines for the first time, and they will study under the guidance of a mentor for their first two-month stint. During these two months, the initiate will be trained in the specifics of the position they have chosen, and will see battle for the first time. Those who do not sharpen their skills quickly do not survive the experience. Though the chiefs of the Reclaimer Corps. do not tell the citizens how many initiates die in their first two months, I can say that the number must be around half -- having seen the lines for myself. It is a sad, but inevitable thing that so many must die in order to find the ones who will live and serve well.   Once the first two-month term is over, the recruits will be granted an extended two-week leave to visit their families and brush up on the finer points of their art at the academy (some refer to this as advanced training). From here, the recruit is officially branded a true reclaimer, and enters at the lowest rank in the order (still a high honor in the city). After the two-week leave, the reclaimer will spend the rest of his life serving for two months at a time and receiving one week of leave for every two-month term served. A most generous amount of leave for an army (though I suppose it is easier that this army never leaves its home city!), but justly deserved. The horrors of the front lines of Myridium are more than most other armies of this world shall ever face.
