Who is the populace?
The native race of color-blind humans. Who are the creatures hiding in plain sight?
A segment of the population who can see in color. Color vision is a recessive trait in this race -- one that hasn't been completely bred out. Why are people becoming aware of the creatures now?
A new disease (which I've dubbed "auroral fever") is sweeping through the capital of Freley as an epidemic. This disease causes people who are carriers of the recessive color vision gene to begin seeing in color. The real problem is that the church has long asserted that color vision -- "auroral madness" as they call it -- has been wiped out, since there have been very few known cases since the legendary son of an ancient chief. Who must race over the next week?
Color-sighted humans. Specifically, the Order of the Eye -- a secret society of color-sighted humans tasked with protecting their kind. What catastrophe do they want to prevent?
A bloody genocide. The church will surely kill every color-sighted person they can find. It is up to the Order to protect these newly color-sighted people from the church. Yet the epidemic has affected huge swaths of the population. Can the Order track down them all and smuggle them out of the city before the Great Aurora appears? Or will the Order have no other choice but to fight the church openly in the streets? What will happen next week and why is it a bad thing?
The next Great Aurora is predicted to be one of the largest in recent history. Nightreign (the arctic winter) has already begun. The moon is waning. Order scientists conclude that the Great Aurora will coincide with the new moon, which is one week away. The Order knows from experience how irresistible auroras are, especially the Great Auroras, to those who can see their true beauty. The coming Great Aurora will no doubt draw out all those who have gained color vision from the epidemic.
