Not much is known of the person behind the mask, and this leads to rumors and gossip. Old men tell tales of how their grandfathers had seen their performances, leading to their enigmatic reputation of a title passed from teacher to student in a long chain of bards. Seemingly always in demand, but never able to be reached, the word on the street is that The Mask is just a front for a business, sending out different performers that use the title of the showman, evidenced by no two shows being alike, same as those performing under the moniker.
In reality, that is a partial truth. With their business partner Mikaeus, the M&M agency has swindled, robbed, extorted and blackmailed their way through the Umbral Isles. Never taking on a score that would draw too much public ire, the results their services render have earned them enough of a reputation to maintain a steady stream of revenue and adventures.

Hoarding one's coin is pointless, and power means nothing if it cannot be exercised without worry of comeuppance. Dealing in information, both can be obtained, while being protected from the downfalls of either.
