Voices from Undearth
'They say that, in the older times, light gave strength to a person. That since our ancestors chose to run, chose to dig, we have slowly become weaker and weaker over time. No one knows how far down humanity has gone in the last six centuries. We dig in the same direction as those before. Are we even digging down? For all the Fourman know we could be digging left, or right...or even back up.' - A miner, thinking out loud.
'Light is not a right! It is a servant of our civilisation. OUR civilisation. You cannot decide to leave and think you have any claim to the light built for the sole purpose of our city. You choose to exile yourself in darkness. I will not stop you. But I will stop you from stealing the light of the people' - A leader of Undearth speaking to potential deserters.
'I see 'em sometimes. Honest I do. I even see kids there. They stand in the Column, bathing in the light, or maybe, drinking it....and....and it does something to 'em. Their marks, they get brighter, more colour but they lose sum'in too. I was hiding and one looked me dead in the eyes. Y'know when you look at people's eyes you sort of see 'em, that they're another person y'know. This one looked right at me and I swear to you...I didn't think they were a person no more. Don't go there no more. Please.' A man pleading with his sister not to investigate.
'She's still alive I know it! Stop saying she's gone because she's not! I'm going up and I don't care if the Fourman try to exile me or the LightLookers try to eat me, or whatever else thing is up there tries to come at me. Mum's up there, alive and I'm going to see her' - A child responding to a bully.
