Fellbane Sanctuary

Where The Oath Keepers Dwell

"If you heed the call of the hunter's blood, these doors stand open to you. If you fight against the wild's sprawl, these doors stand open to you. If you dare to swear the Oath, these doors stand open by you." - Words etched into the entrance doors of Fellbane Sanctuary
Within the winding, cobbled streets of Wardfell, there are a number of grand structures which stand out against the bustling marketplaces and closely packed houses of the oldest city in Reven. Within the industrious eastern quarter, one cathedral like structure stands in quiet contrast over the new store houses and old shop fronts. One might think it strange to find a temple tucked away among the tradesmen, but this cathedral is a different breed to the temples of the northern quarter. A living memorial to Enrian Kelgrove, folk hero and mortal son of Kyriel, Goddess of The Hunt, this building also serves as the headquarters of the renowned and secretive Slayer's Covenant Guild.

Purpose / Function

This grand building serves as the headquarters, lodging, and the central hub of activities for members of the Slayer's Covenant Guild in Wardfell. This Sanctuary also serves as a memorial as it also houses the remains of folk hero Enrian Kelgrove, the first Fellbane.

Denizens

The Lodging quarters, offices, and mess hall remain reserved for fully fledged guild members only, but within the Communal Hall, established clients and new petitioners are allowed access to conduct their business.

Valuables

On top of money to dispense for payments and donations from pleased patrons, the grand vault contains expensive trophies from particularly dangerous hunts, and any materials gathered by parties for a client. Both the vault and the catacombs are well guarded; as guild members who have earned the right to be buried among the honored dead in the catacombs beneath Fallbane are usually buried with their weapons and armor as well.

Architecture

Spanning nearly three full city blocks, Fellbane Sanctuary is an impressive structure of towers, buttresses, and stained glass windows. Gothic in design, and four stories high, the Sanctuary is built of quarried limestone, white marble, and enchanted wood from the Starleaf Forest of Thylora. Almost entirely white, it easily stands out against the darker woods and stones of the surrounding buildings. Similar to a horse-shoe in shape, the Sanctuary is comprised primarily of the grand communal hall, with dedicated space for lodging and private offices off to the lower sides of the hall. Beneath the ground floor, the Sanctuary extends another three floors into the earth below, which are strictly reserved for guild members only. These levels are comprised of the grand vault, The trial chambers for the newly initiated, and finally the catacombs of the honored dead.

History

Following Enrian Kelgrove's death while protecting Wardfell from a horde of frenzied monsters in 1150 UT, King Thileon Emsmont II declared that the hero would receive a burial worthy of his noble sacrifice. The hero was interred into a natural cavern below the newly founded eastern quarter, and the construction of a memorial over his resting place began. The cathedral like memorial would not be completed until 1165 UT, but the city wide celebration of it's completion, and of Enrian Kelgrove's life, finally fulfilled the king's promise to honor the fallen hero. In 1169 UT a number of skilled hunters who felt obligated to become caretakers of the memorial applied to the priesthood of Kyriel to become a sub-sect of their order. This request was unprecedented, but granted. These men and women became the first order dedicated to a Demi-God.

In the year following the establishment of this order, a number of pilgrims approached the keepers of the memorial in supplication for aide with troubles they had in dealing with monsters and other dangers of the wilds which The Fellbane had dedicated his life to keeping under control. Though it was not the original purpose of the young order, they felt they could not ignore such requests if they were to follow Kelgrove's example. Thus, the keepers made the decision to split their number in half between those who would dedicate their efforts to tending the memorial, and those who would answer the requests of supplicants.
As the deeds of those individuals became known, more hunters felt the call to join the Keepers, and the order decided it might be best to revise their purpose. After a few months of deliberation the birth of the Slayer's Covenant was declared. Since then, the guild has built up their sanctuary of those who would dare to follow the example of The Fellbane.

As of the beginning of 1362 CE The Slayer's Covenant is one of three major guilds throughout Reven, Thylora, and Deldrune. With hundreds of fully fledged members and dozens of clients, more sanctuaries have been built, but all answer to the leadership of Fellbane Sanctuary. Many guild members make a point of making a pilgrimage here at least once in their life.
