Goldenmane and The Monster Bear

Gather round, gather round youngsters,
Let Uncle Stormbreaker tell you a tale of a beast and the maiden that calmed its soul.
Many centuries ago, back when this land was still young before it became a place of relaxation and parties, this island was only home to the dryads. A monstrous bear stalked the land, attacking those who journeyed alone.
As time passed the monster grew bolder, attacking a full pride of lions. A young Dryad maiden who came across the aftermath found a small cub as the only survivor. Raising it as her own, the cub grew up as a guardian of the forest, larger than most with a think golden white mane. During this time the monster had slunk back into the forest, attacking solo travelers again.
Now it should be noted that at this time Elves lived on the west cliffs. The town was attacked by the Monstrous bear, causing a now fully grown Goldenmane to ally himself with the Gods of Elysia before they were gods. The five hunted the bear over many sessions, all over the island, and even clashed a few times with it.
The final conflict was said to take place on the top of Solace cliffs, where the temple to Helyn now stands. The monster had chased a group of lost children to the cliff edge, Goldmane killed the beast bringing peace to the island. It is said he still lurks in the forest, protecting the island from those who would bring misery to it.

Variations

The story depicted here is the version told by Captain Stormbreaker to a group of children. Many others exist in the area around Elysia, with each telling having minor differences.

Historical Basis

Many sightings of a large lion prowling the jungle of Elysia have been recorded, as well as Oriom Fairmayne killing such a creature not too dissimilar to the description of Goldmane during the Blight.
