Apparition
Outside the cabin, the wind howled through the trees, while inside, the old woman’s fire was nearly out.
She was the last one.
She was ready to be no more.
The door opened with a bang and the walls seemed to tremble around her for a second. She didn't hurry to turn towards the entrance, because she knew what she would find nothing more than the petty view of an empty valley and the wind flying inside, cold and deadly and... The door closed again. Slowly, this time, as if against the wind and some form of politeness.
"Sorry about that. I try to hold it but the wind was faster," a familiar voice said.
She swallowed, devastated, unable to look at the person that had survived the forest and come back.
"Are you okay?" The apparition asked, touching her shoulder with caution.
"Yes," she managed to say.
"You freaked me out for a second, you know? I'm really sorry I took so long, you must be starving! Here, take this... There, that's smart: eat slowly so you don't get sick. How long have you been with no food?... The fire is dying! I was sure there was enough wood..."
As she nibbled the bland fruit the voice went away for a second, and kept babbling worries as the fire was saved.
"... have to be careful with these things, you know?"
She wasn't the last one, then. The world was still doomed.
