Ore Guards

Ore guards accompany rare earth magnet ore mined in the Northwest Imperative Territory (NIT) on the Orbit, back to Pennsburg where it can be processed. There are guards for each sector of Orbit, as well as specialized guards who travel the distance of the Orbit and back with each shipment of ore. The specialized guards must be promoted from within the guard ranks, so they are used to travel on the Orbit and have likely already encountered some of the situations that can face a guard. It is fairly common in the western portions of the Unified America Project (UAP) for separatist groups to attack the Orbit looking for ore. They would never rob Project Citizens, this would negatively affect the cause, but rare earth magnets are essential for power. Drilling for oil is illegal anywhere in the UAP, including the NIT, so rare earth magnets and solar energy are the most viable options for power. Most technology runs on rare earth magnets, so unauthorized militias and people living off the grid need to find ways to get their hands on them. The Independent Nation of Texas has its own rare earth magnet mines, solar and wind farms, and it is still possible to find oil wells although the need for natural gas is rare even there. The Independent Texan Army occasionally attacks the Orbit to destroy ore and make life more difficult for the Omega. If there were to be a massive power failure, they would be forced to admit their influence only goes so far. They might also have to acknowledge the conditions of the mines and the fact that sources of power have pros and cons. The guards are there to prevent this. Because Project Citizens are against violence in all forms, and shun the idea of discomfort and change, Ore Guard is not a highly regarded profession. They typically didn’t do well in school, don’t have families, and often were criminals who were given the option of a reintegration service job that would keep them mostly away from the populace for long periods of time.
