Raven's Club

The Raven's Club is a members-only club, and like all good secret clubs, the members aren't talking.
Located in Ilyrium, the Raven's Club is officially the headquarters of a Murder of Crows, although anyone is allowed inside. However, because of its association with the Crows, one would not typically spend time in the establishment on just a leisurely whim; this has caused the reputation of the Club to be infamous, at best, and depraved, at worst. Open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, the Raven's Club is always busy serving United Britannia and Hibernia's most notorious citizens.

Staff

Staff changes frequently at the Raven's Club; who's to say why?

History

The Raven's Club was founded in 950; it is one of the oldest pubs in either the human or witch world. It has had a series of names over the centuries, but the name has always been associated with ravens. For most of its existence, the Raven's Club has been a meeting place for those that would like to keep their meetings secret, so its sordid reputation is well-deserved.

Murder of Crows

In 1830, things changed for the Raven Club: a Murder of Crows decided to install themselves permanently in the pub. In fact, Kasper Gray purchased it from its owner at an exorbitant price to ensure their complete control of the building. Because of its centralized location, it was the perfect place for the Crows to conduct their business. Besides the alterations of the Corvi Clava, little changed when the Crows purchased the building.

Menu

Although the Raven's Club serves food and drinks, it is meant as a meeting place, and so the food is typically hardy, filling, and not very fussy. It has a much better reputation than Bones, but its culinary reputation is not why it's famous.

Architecture

From the outside, the Raven's Club resembles many of the other pubs in United Britannia and Hibernia, and in fact, the interior looks rather similar to most other pubs as well. However, behind a rickety old bookcase that houses a collection of tattered paperbacks and battered hardcovers for patrons to read is the real heart of the Raven's Club.

Legality

Prior to the Murder of Crow's buying the Raven's Club, the club was a popular spot to be raided by Vigiles. However, once it was acquired by the Crows, raids stopped.   Careful observers will note this is perhaps because those that attend the Raven's Club presently have the ability to ensure that it's not raided.

Corvi Clava

The Corvi Clava (simply Latin for the Raven's Club) is the tongue-in-cheek secret name given to the space beyond the bookcase. The pub is magicked to be about three times the size of the building, and in addition, there is a number of spells on it to ensure that no one figures that out.   The Corvi Clava (often called the Nest as well) is where the business of a Murder of Crows takes place. Amongst a smattering of meetings rooms and offices, the Crowed Head also has an enormous study there as well. In order to access the Corvi Clava, one must know a complicated password in order to ensure that no one accidentally magicks their way into it.

Author's Notes

The Raven's Club is partially based on Sean's Bar, which is recognized as the oldest bar in the world. I also borrowed menu items from these pubs: The Bingley Arms, The Brazen Head, The Three Horseshoes, the Chef and Brewer Collection, the Greene King pubs, Bill's Restaurant & Bar, and the Tafarn Sinc. As you can probably tell, I'm not from the UK, so if you notice any huge glaring errors, please let me know!   I'm also still working on this, but just wanted to get this out there for feedback!

I would potentially change the benchmark for its food's reputation, as right now "the patrons have a standard" clashed somewhat with "somehow has a better culinary reputation than Bones. " as Bones is the only 1 star establishment you have listed in the dining out article. Other than that though I've got nothing much else to add. You made a great base of operations for a shady organization. You also have a great selection of supporting articles and you did an awesome job on the map.

Check out some of my summer camp articles, like the dangerous flying jackalope or dragon wasps. Or, for something more light-hearted, there is the whimsical language Gobbledygook and Jaden's interesting job as a guano polisher.

Thank you so much! I agree that this is tremendously confusing, so I'll fix that. I really appreciate the feedback!

Thank you! Six of Crows was MOST DEFINITELY an inspiration, so I'm glad it came through! I was definitely thinking of the Crow Club, but I wanted an even more sinister vibe.

This is a promising article so far with an interesting history and premise. The map looks great and I like some of the details like the menu listing both the prices and what time of day they can be ordered. I like the play on words in relation to the bookshelf.

Thanks so much! It was fun to do the map and menu, so I'm glad that they add to the article!

Ooooh, creepy but also cool. Nice detail and map.   I see there's a connected Currency article, but it'd be nice to have a brief summary of the relevant coins here. Maybe a tooltip on the Price label if possible, or otherwise a tooltip in the info section on the menu?

Thank you so much! I didn't even know I could do tooltips as you did in this comment, so this has been tremendously helpful. I'll definitely add that to my menu!

I love the atmosphere of the tavern and your world seems really interesting! I'll have to say that I got really strong Fallen London feelings from the descriptors of the tavern!

Thanks so much! I'm not much of a gamer so I didn't know what Fallen London is but I'm so glad you mentioned it because it's RIGHT UP MY ALLEY, so thank you!

I think that games like Sunless Sea and Sunless Skies are really peculiar when it comes to gaming, because in my opinion they really are more like strategic visual novels if that makes any sense. I am always playing them for the story and the story opportunities rather than for the gameplay!

I like this a lot, the fact you mention that this pub/club's food and drinks are more of an addition rather than the attraction, yet still including it is very neat. It does give this more of a meeting place when you make that comment. I also loved the connecting articles, as you captured me with your article and I was more interested in learning more about your world. Well done!

Mar 24, 2022 16:47 by pyrrha

Thank you so much! I never know if the connecting articles just clog it or are helpful, so I'm so glad to hear it's the latter!

I really like this. Having a secret door is always fun and the menu looks very cool.

Thanks so much! I'd love to have a secret door in my house so I'm always slipping it in.

Thank you so much! The menu was both the hardest part and the most fun, so I'm so glad it came out the way it did!
