Tenebris
Your worst nightmare
"Oh, it is terrible. I cannot even describe it." My grandfather used to tell me this story often, and I was always on the edge of my seat, no matter how many times I had heard it.
"It's five times the size of any wolf, and its claws are so sharp it could cut through steel. They say the Tenebris has red eyes from the human blood it drinks, but who lives to accurately describe it to others? When it attacks, it appears in black smoke, and the person knows immediately they are dead. And not just dead; they will be tortured for hours. For this beast is controlled by a witch, an evil witch who uses the animal to do his or her wicked deeds.
"But they say that some drop dead from fear upon seeing spontaneous black smoke. Who wants to be tormented and eaten? I'm sure there's nothing left of someone after the Tenebris is done. But it follows the witch's orders exactly; one child said that the Tenebris had killed her mother, and just stood there staring, blood and skin hanging from its mouth, and did not touch her. The Tenebris must have been ordered not to. But who knows if the Tenebris exists? As I said, very few survive, and those that do...well, they often wish they hadn't."
It was a horrible story, but when I was a kid, I loved the thrill of hearing it. I loved the thrill and knowing I was safe. Sure, Grandad said it could exist, but it didn't. Monsters didn't exist.
Right?
The Tenebris is an absolutely frightening animal. Similar in many ways to a wolf, the Tenebris is much more terrifying; its immense size, murderous teeth and claws, and its ability to disappear and reappear make it a person's worst nightmare. Previously, it was thought that the Tenebris was simply a fictional animal used in children's stories to frighten; however, the Tenebris's existence comes into question later on. The Tenebris only feeds on human flesh and drinks human blood. Typically, a Tenebris will torture its prey before killing it. The Tenebris is created by Dark Magic. Once that occurs, the witch is completely connected to the Tenebris and is in control of it at all times. (If not under direct orders, the Tenebris does have some autonomy.) When the Tenebris is not needed, it is put into a stasis that allows it to be virtually immortal. Additionally, the Tenebris is able to disappear and reappear in a close location, indicated by a puff of black smoke.
