Fafnir
A hopeless case.
Early Life
Born into the Legion's forces, this fellow grew up in a less than friendly environment. As most children in the clan, he never got to spend much time with his parents; even though he met them on occasion, they were strangers to him the entire time. He never got along very well with the other kids in his unit. With not being the sharpest tool in the shed and easily intimidated, they teased him for being a "dumbass" and "scaredy-cat". His best (and only) friend was a girl of the same age as him, part of the same unit. Her name was Vertigo. She wouldn't have stood up for him and probably only mostly tolerated him, but Fafnir was rather attached to her. His days were spent exercising and getting "education". The former was preparation for his eventual soldier career, the latter a steady supply of Legion-approved propaganda. The rest of the time the kids and teens were allowed to socialize with each other, play games, or watch TV.Adolescence & Adulthood
As soon as he was 16 years old, Fafnir was trained in handling guns and close-quarters weapons. After being put through this basic training, he was given a more specialized crash course for his unit's main purpose - chemical warfare. The unit 37-42, like all 37-XX units, was intended to support the other units with chemical weapons like napalm and flamethrowers. For this, they used infantry-carried weapons as well as napalm-carrying planes and flamethrower tanks. Fafnir participated in several raids that way, but quickly had to find out that to their officers, he and his comrades were highly expendable. Casualties were many, and Fafnir himself only managed to get out of fights barely alive many times - often by pure luck. The Breaking Point
It didn't take long for the already easily anxious Fafnir to develop an outright paranoia. He was constantly on edge, got mistrustful of everyone (even his closest friend) and slept poorly. He slowly but surely started doubting his clan and their treatement of their soldiers. In hushed tones, others talked about life outside the clan. The rumours seemed very tempting. At 19 years old, Fafnir was a complete nervous wreck. On the order of his unit's medic, he was temporarily suspended from participating in combat. What followed was him spending a lot of time in the confines of his unit's casern, and hating every second of it. He grew increasingly worried that he would be designated completely unfit for combat and disposed of, like he had seen happening to others before."They painted the devil on the walls!"Eventually, he hatched a crazy plan. His condition hadn't improved at all. He had convinced himself that he was going to get executed, so the only option he saw was running away. When he was visited by his old friend Vertigo, he confessed his plans to her. He asked her to join him, but she refused. As she threatened to report Fafnir to the superiors, he snapped and killed her.
