Clock Tower (District)

Sphere: Academic   The Clock Tower is the central tower of Ur's University, but that name gradually came to apply to the University as a whole, and then the district of the city surrounding the university.

The Halls Collegiate

The three central buildings of the University are collectively known as the Halls Collegiate. Compit Hall, home of the College of the Realms, is a rambling two-storey warren of smaller buildings which have gradually merged into one; Silvilim Hall, with its soaring, elegant towers, hosts the College of Aether; and the blocky, glowering Seven Tones Hall is occupied by the College of Truth. The Clock Tower itself is the dwelling and office of the Chancellor and her staff.

The Stumbles

Predating the University, the Stumbles is the site of a vast quarry - the source of the quartzite which much of Ur is built from. Although the quarry is mostly worked out, it is still the home of the gangs of labourers involved in any construction projects which might occur across the city.

The Field Office

Members of the University frequently require obscure information to feed their research - information which can only be gained far from the walls of Ur. The small parties of Surveyors sent out by the Field Office specialise in retrieving this information - for a sizeable fee, of course. Comprised of Stumbles roughnecks, graduate students, and out-of-work mercenaries, a Surveyor who manages enough missions may retire in luxury - although many prefer to remain active well past this point.

Mirror Ward

Workshops, laboratories and the occasional smoking crater fill the Mirror Ward. Much of it is owned by one or another of the colleges, and is where the more practical, applied side of the Clock Tower's research occurs. Wedged in-between the research buildings are small boutiques selling obscure reagents and still more obscure experimental apparatus to the researchers, and the latest products of experimentation to the unwary.

The Scriveners' Grip

While each of the colleges keeps its own library, they are all dwarfed by the Scriveners' Grip, the largest library in the known multiverse. The Scriveners are divided into Coteries, each led by a hereditary First Quill, and responsible for a specific category of book. Many copies may be created of a particular book, but the First Edition is always guarded closely. The internal politics of the Scriveners are complex and occasionally cutthroat - the dispute between the Divinatory Geometry and Celestial Topology coteries over who should curate Camwright's Observations broke out into open warfare a decade ago, with many other coteries taking sides, and the Chancellor of Truth was forced to step in.
