Dream Drainer

"Dream drainer is what happens when a being is bit by both a Roaner's mosquito and a tick at the same time. The first bit might seem tiny and insignificant, however, that little bite causes most beings not to clot, and fevers are also a common side effect."   "Okay. So just rest until it gets better?"   "No. Because it interacts with the tick bite in an unprecedented way. The patient starts to hallucinate, and the fever keeps growing. A thick mucus starts to drain from pores near the temples."   "What happens after that?"   "Stay at the patient's side, wipe away the mucus, and when it starts to change from multicoloured to reddish black, use clotters for the blood. That's when it's at the end and most painful to the patient."

Transmission & Vectors

This condition is transmitted via insect bite, but in a rare set of circumstances that many don't fulfill and is thankfully not infectious.
  1. A patient needs to be bitten by a Roaner's mosquito (most common in summer)
  2. A patient then needs to be bitten by a tick (common when outdoors)
  3. The bites need to be within a time period of an hour or two*; otherwise, the body is already fighting against the anti-clotting agent in the Roaner's mosquito bite and it doesn't interact with the tick bite.
  4. *except in circumstances when the bites are within 2-3 inches of each other. Then the time period can be up to five hours.

Causes

This condition is usually seen in hot, tropical areas such as the southeastern part of the US. After a heavy rainfall, mosquitoes multiply. In addition to the species of mosquitoes that are natural, there is a created breed called the Roaner mosquitoes. These were accidentally created when they were caught within one of Roaner's magic experiments, and are still in the wild today since it's hard to find all of the mosquitoes.

Symptoms

The symptoms are fever, a multicolored discharge, and hallucinations.

Treatment

Treatment is to let Dream Drainer run its course, and when the discharge goes from "dreams" (the multicolored discharge from the temples) to blood clotters need to be used to help keep the patient alive.

Prognosis

The condition starts with two itchy bug bites, then progresses to fever and discharge. The fevers and discharge continue to increase, and then, when the interactions between the two bites is finished, the multicolored discharge changes to red (blood). That's when, if a blood clotter is used, the patient will normally recover, needing a bit of extra time before they leave the hospital.    If a blood clotter isn't used, then the patient will eventually bleed out and die.

Sequela

After a patient has been given clotters, recuperation stage complications can include swelling (discharge that hasn't made its way out of the body), excessive bleeding (areas where the clotters still need to work), and can even result in problems breathing.

Affected Groups

The most affected groups are those who camp in the wilderness. After that, there seems to be no age, gender, blood type, or other predisposition.

Hosts & Carriers

Roaner mosquitoes are the only ones that carry the trigger to this disease. If any other mosquitoes bite a person, in addition to the tick bite, nothing happens besides having two places that itch. However, the mosquitoes themselves seem not to be affected by it.

Prevention

There are a few ways to prevent this: first, don't live in the affected areas. Second, wear bug spray, or third (most expensive), buy an amulet to ward off bites.

Epidemiology

Thankfully, this condition is not contagious and goes not move through the population.

History

The first recorded case was Drew Roaner. He had been conducting magical experiments outside while camping, and when his body was found, it was feared to be a new disease. It took several groups to figure out that he'd been experimenting, that mosquitoes were involved, that a person had to also have a tick bite, and that the combination of the two was what killed him.

Cultural Reception

The cultural reception was thankfulness that the problem wasn't contagious. Afterwards, when treatment worked and the first patient of Dream Drainer survived, it sank into "everyone knows but no one really has to worry about it unless you live there" part of collective knowledge.
