Balewind

Gobtober 2021: Prompt 22

Often called "the storm giant's wrath," the western slopes of the Gologian Range receive absurd amounts of wind coming down from the white summits. Sharp and biting, the winds drive downward and cut off merchants attempting to ascend the climb to Deep Golog. These winds range from 30–40 mile per hour winds. Their chill bites through clothing and prevents any airborne travelers from ascending as well.   As if these conditions were not bad enough, there are chances during the turbulent spring for a phenomenon known as "balewinds." These winds are sharper and harsher and wilder. Often they burst around a person then whip themselves back again striking against their backs. For those who have never experienced this before, they think they are being smacked or hit. Often lacerations occur, especially if there is little clothing worn. Indeed, after several minutes one may appear whipped and cut as if from a thousand knives. And after this they are knocked down by the buffeting winds traveling upward of 90 miles per hour.   Wagons or carriages are torn asunder, their planks and nails ripped out from the gusts. The only safety is a cave on the leeward side or thick stone structures. This is until the boulders crash down, loosened by the windy tempest. These boulders fly as if they were pebbles being kicked by Kord himself. There was a recounting of events during the worst balewind of the century in 2488. A whole side of a cliff dislodged itself and fell directly on top of a cluster of homes. Everyone inside perished.   The Deep Gologers know never to go out during a balewind, and have their forecasters predict the storms. For the vernal months, trade is limited if not usually banned.
