Vaadstrael

Over a thousand years have passed since the empire of the ancient humans fell into chaos and ruin.  In that time the races of Vaadstrael have attempted to mend the damage done to their world by the Ancients' oppressive regime.  With the passage of so much time, even the technomantic atrocities of the humans fade into folklore.  The Ancients themselves are now little more than a cautionary tale on the danger of hubris and absolute power, only the most durable of their structures and artifacts remaining as evidence of the truth behind the legends.   Conflict has not been absent from Vaadstrael, but the world-shaking calamity that the humans once visited on all nations has been both impossible and unthinkable in their absence.  The young races have grown prosperous without the looming shadow of the humans and their genocidal rule.  This relative peace has lasted a millennia.   But no more.  For the legacy of the Ancients did not die with them, and neither did all the horrors their empire wrought.   The magic of the Ancients, worldshaping, has been brought back into the world.  Claiming territory is no longer a symbolic act of flag-planting, but a violent rearraging of the terrain itself to suit those that would make their claim.  Entirely new forms of chaos and strife are born as the very land itself is twisted into a weapon of war by all sides.  Scorching sand dunes sweep over frozen tundra.  Strange foliage writhes in horrifically rapid growth, consuming sweeping grasslands and rolling hills.  Surging tides crash over gardens of alchemically-grown fleshturf.   Skirmishes, battles, and campaigns like these span the whole of Vaadstrael, engulfing all but a few isolated oases in conflict.  These are the Worldshaper Wars, and they can only end when Vaadstrael is remade completely, or when it shatters beneath the strain of such violence.
