Widely regarded as the most prosperous time period in the history of Vaasa, the Reign of King Marcus saw many kingdoms united in peace, the peoples of the land thrived under free trade and fair taxation, magical research flourished and even scientific advances were seen. Many great works of art date back to this time, as well as great music was composed that can be played by only the most talented bards of the modern era. Those beings both malevolent and chaotic were routed and retreated to the far reaches of the empire, greatly diminished in number.
So understandably, The Night of the Poisoned Daggers, when King Marcus was betrayed and murdered, is regarded as one of the darkest days in the history of the land. Members of his inner circle plotted to take his throne, and hired vile assassins to strike him down. Palace guards were paid off, and his killers were able to surprise him in his living quarters where he felt most safe. His queen and family were taken prisoner and left to rot in the dungeons underneath the palace as the kingdom fell to ruin under the corrupt leadership of those who conspired against him.
It is not known if the conspirators were in league with the forces of chaos, or just motivated by pure greed, but the once great civilization collapsed and chaos took the land. Many of the great advances that were made under his reign are now lost. Yet his memory lives on. Holidays are still recognized in the modern era that celebrate the day of his birth, coronation, and the Night of the Poisoned Daggers is held as a day of remembrance, for the king and all who have fallen by the betrayal of those they trusted.
