The Schism
During the 71 Cycle there was a Empire known as Technus. The Technus Empire where able to tap into and harness the worlds leylines to advance their civilization to the point of self-sufficiency. The Empire had subjugated the world to such an extent that the line between Magic and Technology was blurred to the point that they ended up being the same thing. It came to the point that the gods of the world had no sway over the ongoing of the world. This allowed the gods to exist in the same space as mortals.
The rise of the Technus Empire caused its inhabitants to disregard the wondrous world they live in which lead to the rapid decline and exhaustion of the magical resources of the world. The cycle came to an end about 100,000,000 earlier then those that proceeded it or followed it and because the will of nature cause the gods to forcefully begin that cycle's Diacide War.
After the fall of the Technus Empire the world was a barren and practically a lifeless husk due to the leaching of magic from the world's leylines. The gods that remained agreed to making it impossible for mortals to locate the worlds leylines and to enforce this they created "The Ageless Guardians". These "Guardians" would be unaffected by the passing of cycles, they where created from by the leyline which they would protect. They then created from themselves lesser versions of themselves to aid in the protection of leyline in question.These lesser versions where called sentinels.
The creation of the guardians and their sentinels brought the world back into balance and ensured the existence of magic. The gods also decided to lock away the knowledge to create such devices to harness the power of the leylines, then sealed away the means to unlock the locks on various foreign planes of existence to the lock and key for this knowledge could not be accessed without fatal consequences. These locations couldn't be found even on accident, these locations where only known by the eldest of the Elder Gods all of which agreed to lock themselves away outside this universe, so their knowledge could never be used.
Once the means of an empire such as Technus had been removed from the equation the Elder Gods then allowed the 72 cycle to commence. During that cycle they made sure that any trace or fragment of the past cycle was expunged from existence.
