Ceylan

Purpose

-Creator, what is my purpose here?
-You are the warmth in the winter nights. The light on the darkness. The flame burning the guilty.
-I don't want to hurt them.
-I created you and your sisters. You will do as I order.
— Ceylan and The Creator

Ceylan belongs to a group of Magic entities entrusted with the duty to take care of elements and lives in one designated region. Her purpose is to obey the commands of The Creator. Like all her sisters, she does not age, and she can take a human form when she visits the land designated under her protection. Her powers are related to fire. She gave fire to the humans in Valabrad and is her responsibility they use it in the best way to advance their lives, and not to create more problems. When the humans use fire to harm others on purpose, she punishes them. She wants to believe she is fair with them and The Creator is happy with her.

Ceylan spent thousands of years roaming Valabrad, making sure to fulfil her duties to the best of her abilities. She learned a lot about humans. Ceylan concluded she could never understand them. Humans were capable of such wondrous feats and unimaginable horrors. But they existed for a reason. Sadly that reason included a lot of hurt, pain and despair. But she knew she shouldn't meddle with them beyond her duties and keep to herself and her sisters.

The caretaker

-Lylla, listen to me. You have to stop this.
-I won't. They must pay for what they did to me!
-Lylla! We must fulfil our duties! Stop this now.
-I don't care about my duties anymore. Alane broke my heart. He will pay. His Kingdom will fall.
-You don't know what you're doing.
— Ceylan and Lylla

Ceylan loved all her sisters, the ones that shared her magic powers and also the ones tasked with other duties. But she had one favourite: Lylla. She took care of nature, plants and animals. Lylla took a forbidden interest in humans, one Ceylan warned her against but her sister didn't want to listen to her advice. Despite her best efforts, Ceylan couldn't stop Lylla's curse over Valabrad. She was the only one who tried to help Lylla after she was cast out. She visited her often and did her best to convince Lylla to take back the curse. Lylla told her that it was too late that once the King Alane betrayed her, humans were doomed. They tasted magic and she had lost her one true love because of that. Lylla was angry and only listened to vengeance bitter advice.
Ceylan stayed with Lylla for a long time, trying to convince her to stop the curse, but it was in vain. When she finally returned to Valabrad, she discovered how magic had corrupted all the humans that acquired the power. Because of her absence fire was used uncontrolled, causing many deaths and damage. Ceylan abandoned all hope to help her beloves sister and decided to do her best to help Valabrad and the humans. It wasn't enough. The balance was broken and while she and the other sisters tried to continue her appointed tasks, Lylla's curse grew stronger, and she realized they couldn't repair what was broken. They feared the consequences of The Creator finding out about what Lilla had done. They concentrated their efforts to keep the curse only in Valabrad.

Ceylan knew their efforts wouldn't contain it for long. They weren't all-powerful after all. Something more was needed. And if humans were the reason for all this mess, maybe the humans could fix it or at least fight the consequences. It was a desperate plan.

Decision

-You are as foolish as Lylla. This won't work.
-You've seen what magic did to Alane. Why do you think he will be different?
-Because he led another life. And he believes in balance, in harmony. His songs and actions are proof of his good intentions.
— Ceylan and her sisters

Ceylan waited for a human worthy of getting her powers. The Big War started, blood, death and chaos spread throughout the Kingdom. She saw humans lose their minds over the magic. She always knew they were dangerous, that was the reason she warned her sister Lylla against meddling with them. Humans hurt each other. she knew this very well and witnessed many horrors during The Big War. After it ended, most mages were dead, and a few survivors were in hiding. She still waited. Ceylan didn't want to give her powers to a human who already had Lylla's because that could make the mage even more powerful and break their mind completely.

After a couple of decades someone caught her attention: Aral, a famous bard, charming, talented and with a good heart. She disguised herself as a human to meet him. Ceylan made a decision when she learned soldiers were after him and his comrades. She was the one who left the envelope with the message for Aral.

Ceylan planned to mentor Aral and give him her powers to defend Valabrad against Lylla when she decided to fulfil her curse and wipe out the land, and more importantly, against the Three Guardians. The ones The Creator will send to punish them all for their mistakes. Ceylan was sure that because of her natur, she couldn't fight against them alone, but maybe with Aral and others like him, they could have a chance. perhaps The creator would take pity on them.

Ceylan took Aral under her wing and become his mentor, comrade and lover. Only time will tell if her plan will succeed.

Ceylan could set Valabrad on fire if she wanted to, this would have the consequence of vanishing her too from existence. The land would be ashes, and so would she.

In her human form, Ceylan has less control over her powers. She can't perform all the rituals and enchantments she can do in her true form.

One of her favourite tricks is to simulate fireflies. The first time she tried it, she caused a fire in the forest, and Lylla reprimand her. She has gotten much better since then.

She was so angry when her sisters cast out Lylla that she was tempted to burn them all. She refrained because that would only cause more problems.

Despite knowing the fire is fundamental to life, Ceylan suffered when others used it to cause harm, even more, when she had to punish a human for doing so. She never killed anyone, her heart didn't allow it. But The Creator never complained about her. The Creator never appeared again after their daughters were left in charge of their land and all life in there.

I really liked this article, I loved learning about all the interesting conflicts through this character. I like that she's conflicted with her task, but finds a way to do it to the best of her ability. The frequent art is a nice touch. Lovely work.
