Garrett's Drabbles

Drabbles are microfiction stories of exactly 100 words, not including the title.

The Hunt

Ice pooled in Garrett's gut as the inferno blazed, and fear gripped his heart like he'd never known.   Lia just couldn’t be in there. He wouldn’t believe it.   He looked to the Great Woods. He’d rescued her from that dangerous hunting ground before; his gut told him he'd find her there again if he hurried.   Rushing, he geared up, gathered his magimandi, and started the hunt late into the night. The scaly wolf-like creatures tracked her deep into the woods.   A frantic alarm rang a traitorous sound, a detector of sorts. They’d not followed her scent. They’d tracked her magic.

Conundrum

Garrett stared into his ale, questioning everything he knew.   Magic was evil. Dangerous. It must be hunted and destroyed for the safety and preservation of Paltetia.   The hunt was all Garrett knew.   And he let her go. Treason. He'd be executed if anyone learned of it. Should he confess? Step down as Chief Hunter?   Had magic corrupted Lia? Or had it always been there, lurking within the sweet tyke who'd chased rabbits and pulled his whiskers?   Was she evil? Dangerous?   She was hot-tempered and rebellious, sure. But evil?   She can't be! He slammed down his ale. He wouldn't quit yet.

Author's Notes

Here I'm just playing around with a very specific type of microfiction to see how it works. Thank you for reading!

I like it but I can't say I see the big picture. Is he surprised about the her magic? (I suppose both stories are related)

He is surprised, and they are connected. I'll think on how I can rework the first one to be a little clearer, though it's a little tough working with only 100 words. :) This isn't really intended to be serious writing anyway.   Thanks for the comment!

This reminds me of the EACWP flash fiction contests. It's difficult to write a story in 100 words. Well done!
