Tighearnán "Naushe" Ailín Kearney

Tighearnán "Naushe" Ailín Kearney (a.k.a. Southpaw | Naushe)

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Strong and conditioned; however, his addiction to drink has softened his gut considerably over the years. His shoulders, arms, and legs are considerably sturdy, though.

Body Features

A variety of tattoos dot his physique, but his right arm is the most heavily adorned. He has fair amount of body hair, all of which is greying at this point.

Facial Features

Naushe's nose is petite, despite having been broken on multiple occasion. His brows are thick, lips thin, and eyes large. While having put on excess weight in his advanced age, his jawline remains sharp beneath a full, wiry beard. Every inch of his face is decorated by freckles.

Identifying Characteristics

He's missing a handful of teeth, most of which have been replaced with brass. Both ears are pierced with bronze hoops.

Physical quirks

When uncomfortable or angry, his jaw tenses. If left idle too long, he bites and picks the skin at the edge of his nailbed, as he's run out of nail to nibble.

Special abilities

Dance Dwarven Gut

Apparel & Accessories

Naushe focuses on comfort and practicality. Most of his clothes are made of common materials and are far from extravagant.

Personal history

❧ Naushe was firstborn to Roibeárd and Caoimhe Kearney in the lower district of Caidagh. He grew up with a younger sister, Fionnuala, whom arrived just two years after, and the both of them became incredibly close, despite their difference in interests. ❧ Naushe took to art fairly early, which brought on quite a bit of heat in regards to other boys his age. He was heavily bullied for his creative endeavors and in order to survive this harsh adolescence, he was forced to take up fighting. While he wasn't any good at the start, he certainly got enough practice before transitioning into his teenage years.   ❧ Having been known as a scrapper on the streets, Naushe struggled to stay out of trouble when he hit his teens. He was constantly at odds with law enforcement and over time, his friend group teetered more toward delinquency. He invested in a handful of tattoos at this age.   ❧ His father put in sincere effort to steer his son back on track through various punishments and harsh chores, but it was his sister Nula that dragged Naushe back to the light-- for the most part. Her love for music solidified her relationship with a traveling performance troupe that frequented the lower levels of Caidagh. One of her good friends from the migrants, Emese Czekeres, was their most cherished dancer and she hit it off quite well with the rebellious Naushe.   ❧ Though her love for travel was great, learning she was with child convinced her to remain landlocked. The two were wed before either turned twenty. He hadn't money for a ring yet, but the family his sister planned to marry into offered Naushe a job at their sawmill. Years faded fast; he soon had the funds to purchase a proper wedding ring and rent a home of his own. His life seemed to be looking up.   ❧ They named their first daughter Aurélia [ she eventually preferred the moniker “Rel” once old enough to voice her opinion ] and while the added financial strain accompanying a new baby placed additional stress on him, Naushe scraped by with a second, familiar job: fighting. He was significantly successful in the pit known as the [ redacted ], so he earned sizable compensation with each victorious round. His evenings were eventually supplemented with a dash of gambling to pick up the slack.   ❧ It was when his second child, Odhrán-- or Ronnie-- was born that Naushe really began to feel the pressure. The nights grew more arduous, the aches lingered far longer than ever before, and he was almost always late for his shifts at the sawmill come morning. He took to whiskey in hopes of dulling the pain-- both emotional and physical. His fellow fighters at the [ redacted ] only exacerbated his dependency, often offering to buy him multiple drinks whilst he competed nearly every night.   ❧ Additionally, his weakened mental state proved problematic in most of his relationships. He argued with Emese on the daily and was frequently absent in their bed, overstepped boundaries with Nula regarding her marriage, and his reliance on alcohol gnawed heavily into their savings. The only time where he wasn't a total wreck was when he was around his children. They were a potent source of joy, enough to coax him back from the edge each minute they shared with one another.   ❧ [ pocan born ] [ lack funds - move in with the donoghues ] [ loan taken out ]   ❧ [ pocan’s death ] With Puck gone, the drunkard fell back into old habits to cope with his nauseating grief   ❧ [ fight with risteard ] [ nearly loses job at sawmill ] [ nula and naushe grow apart ]   ❧ The remaining Kearneys etched out a mundane life in the city, keeping their noses clean [mostly] and adequately coping with the rampant classist behavior that plagued all of Caidagh. Eventually, both children grew old enough to take on paths of their own. Rel stole away to the sea. Ronnie pursued dance in a neighboring country. This era of presumed peace didn't last, though.   ❧ Because Naushe had foolishly accepted a loan years prior from his employer at the [ redacted ], a wealthy guild-master named Padraig, the price tag skyrocketed over time and he found himself drowning in overwhelming debt. The payments he had made in the past didn't so much as touch the outstanding charge, which prompted Paddy to remind his debtor of said gravity. Threats were made, many targeting Naushe's loved ones, and immediately following a merciless beatdown, the penniless lush called upon a family friend and arranged passage to the south.   ❧ [ new life in wherever the adventurers go idk ]

Accomplishments & Achievements

Marriage Three Children [ Aurelía, Odhrán, and Pocán ]

Failures & Embarrassments

At odds with law enforcement during the entirety of his adolescence Crushed his right foot at work-- the injury permanently hindered his dancing ability Nearly lost his job at the sawmill after a fight with his brother-in-law Unable to kick his alcohol addiction, which has threatened his marriage for years Failed to absolve his debt with Padraig and ultimately departed from his hometown to evade further consequences

Mental Trauma

Lost his son to an accident on the ice and has never forgiven himself since-- his wife voluntarily shares the weight of this overwhelming burden

Intellectual Characteristics

Not all that bright. He has life experience, so he's willing to offer opinion on matters regarding common sense; however, he's not remarkably educated.

Morality & Philosophy

He tries to do what's right, although his definition of right and wrong is often up for debate. Regardless, he will help someone in need, even if he gripes about it beforehand.

Taboos

Homophobia - his son is openly gay, so he's quite sensitive to the subject Racism

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

His family's safety. Overcoming his drinking habit. Pursuing art, despite it being years.

Savvies & Ineptitudes

Was once a skilled dancer; a leg injury has since deflated his original aptitude, but he still has rhythm. Has nearly mastered throwing a hatchet. As a teen, he and his friends would practice for hours on end, chucking axes at a neighbor's shed. Unfortunately, every so often, they'd strike a window. Is a fabulous artist. His charcoal drawings are something to behold and he's designed most of his own tattoos.

Likes & Dislikes

Likes music/dance, art, boxing, and alcohol. Dislikes losing, feeling/being called stupid, work, and alcohol.

Virtues & Personality perks

Willing to sacrifice a lot for those he cares deeply for. Doesn't particularly like the thought of killing, but is willing to if his or his friends'/family's lives are on the line. Works hard to provide for his wife and children; however, he loathes putting in the hours. Doesn't particularly care for wealth-- granted, he's never experienced it. Ignorance is bliss. Is actually a good father. Despite having worked multiple jobs throughout his children's younger years, he always made time for his kids. Even now, he's willing to drop everything if either are in need of his help.

Vices & Personality flaws

Struggles with alcoholism. Has a foul temper and a fragile ego. Isn't emotionally available when it comes to his marriage. Because of his physically-detrimental career in the pit, his memory has suffered. It's quite difficult for him to remember, be it short-term tasks or important events in his past.

Personality Quirks

Is considerably near-sighted, but refuses to wear glasses [they'd get broken in a brawl]. He squints if trying to focus on something in the distance. Right foot never healed properly, so he's been plagued with a slight limp since the accident at the mill. Luckily, he's left-foot dominant, so it hasn't significantly affected his fighting stance.

Hygiene

Smells of whisky. Breath, hair, clothes, fingers-- it isn't always a potent scent, but it's present at all times. His teeth are yellowed from aging. His hair is coarse and dry; he's never used any product to keep it healthy. Despite all that, he bathes often enough for the average male, I guess.

Religious Views

Leans into allowing others to assume he's religious, but struggles to connect with any specific deity.

Social Aptitude

Can blend into a crowd and mesh with others in conversation, yet prefers to be alone for the most part.  Every now and again, he'll crave social interaction; however, the urge is quite rare.

Mannerisms

Brows and eyes are /exceedingly/ expressive. Scratches at his gut when in thought or vacant.  Sometimes he opts for the back of his neck if he's moderately uncomfortable. Once angered, his nostrils flare to visually express his fury/irritation.

Hobbies & Pets

Loves to dance, draw, and test his mettle.  This includes sparring in the ring, throwing axes, arm wrestling, or anything of that nature.  Drinking contests are his forte. He's dabbled in tattooing and pottery, too.

Speech

Real-world Irish accent.  His voice is of average timbre, but he articulates his t's and s's with a sharp, distinct emphasis.  While his appearance is that of a brute, his tone is soothing and smooth-- that is, if his temper is in check. When exceptionally angry, he tosses about a slew of vulgarities and takes on a hoarse rasp.

A short-tempered lush that often finds himself trading blows with those that get under his skin. He has two children and the marriage between he and his wife is hanging on by a thread.
