Assatthan

Assatthan are creatures that, like the godtouched, have the power of the elements in their blood due to an accident of birth.   Assatthan are produced when a rush of elemental force saturates any animals in a region, either by natural or magical occurrences, altering their nature to the point that their children with other mortals are born as assatthan. Assatthan, unlike the godtouched, are rarely viewed as a blessing and are frequently seen as a celestial punishment. Due to the widespread belief that an assatthan is a godly offspring, outright abandonment of the infant is unusual, however many children have rough childhoods and are ostracized by the majority of their society.   Assatthan inherit aspects of their dual character from both sides. They are of the same race as their parents, but their skin is unusually colored (red, green, blue, or gray), and they have a strange appearance. The elemental blood coursing through their veins expresses itself in diverse ways in each assatthan, most commonly as magical ability.   An assatthan might be mistaken for a humanoid of their parent's species when seen in shadow. Those descended from the earth or water are heavier, while those descended from the air or fire are lighter. Some characteristics of an assatthan's mortal parent (pointed ears from an elf, a stockier frame and thick hair from a dwarf tiny hands and feet from a halfling, a gnome with unusually big eyes, and so on) are evocative of the assatthan's mortal parent.   Many assatthan live as exiles, exiled because of their disturbing looks and peculiar magic, or as leaders of feral humanoids and bizarre cults in uncharted territory. Others rise to positions of power, particularly when elemental entities are respected.   Assatthan are usually self-assured, believing that they are capable of facing nearly any obstacle that comes their way. In one assatthan, this conviction may appear as elegant self-assurance, while in another, it may manifest as arrogance. Assatthan's self-assurance may occasionally blind them to danger, and their grand schemes frequently bring them and others into trouble.   A assatthan's sense of self can be eroded by too much failure, therefore they continuously push themselves to better, polishing their abilities and mastering their profession.   Assatthan are uncommon creatures that may go their whole lives without seeing another of their kind. There are no major assathan cities or empires. Assatthan seldom form their own groups and instead absorb the cultures and societies into which they are born. The more unusual their appearance, the more difficult it is for them. Many assatthan go unnoticed in crowded cities, where their uniqueness hardly raises an eyebrow in environments used to a wide range of individuals.   Those who live on the frontier, on the other hand, have it much tougher. People are less accepting of diversity there. The most an assatthan can expect for is a cold shoulder and a suspicious stare; in more backward areas, they risk ostracism and even violence from people who mistake them for fiends. Faced with a difficult life, these assatthan seek refuge in the wilds, settling in mountains, woods, near lakes, or underground.

Naming Traditions

Assatthan use the naming conventions of the people among whom they were raised. They might later assume distinctive names to capture their heritage, such as Flame, Ember, Wave, or Onyx.
