Firelancer
As the innovations of technologists and inventors challenge older styles of combat, the heavily armored infantryman and mounted knight make way for lightly-armored warriors who value speed and mobility over protection as they target their enemies from afar with the unreliable but deadly Firelance.
In addition to their battlefield mobility and deadly skill with Firelance, firelancers are further defined by how they’ve incorporated their trade into their adventuring lives. Three such roles are included here: bushwhackers excel at sniping enemies without being seen, drifters rely on their reputations to strike terror in the hearts of their enemies, and mavericks see the gun as just another tool in their bag of tricks to make a little coin as they travel the world.
Some firelancers are out for glory, revenge, or a need to make the world a better place but whatever their reasons all face one similar obstacle: firearms and bullets are expensive. Even when they’ve got enough firepower the nature of their preferred weaponry’s ammunition makes it hard to come by on the cheap, and there’s always a better or enhanced Firelance to someday add to their arsenal.
Keeping a steady stream of wealth is essential for any adventuring firelancer and those that can’t manage to fill their coffers quickly find themselves retired—sometimes by circumstance, sometimes by a rival’s bullet.
Just picking up a Firestar doesn’t make someone a firelancer—anybody can do that. What makes a firelancer distinct from simpler warriors wielding firearms is that they are made of altogether sterner stuff, their fleetness only of any use because they have hearts of steel to back up lightning reflexes and unerring accuracy. In a sense they grasp the truest spirit of adventure, boldly dashing headlong into danger with unshakeable confidence that no matter how much trouble they get into, they have pluck enough to make it through to the end.
Firelancer Codes
Though a relatively new technology and an even newer culture of use growing around it, three ways of approaching life behind the barrel of a Firelance, or "codes", have quickly been adopted. They are:- The Bushwhacker - who tries to incapacitate their opponent before they are even aware of their presence.
- The Maverick - who combines magical tricks along with quickdraw techniques to tip the balance of a fight in their favor.
- The Drifter - who are always on the move, using their skill with the firearm to build a legendary reputation.
