In response to The Great Vallar Impact, a conclave of extremely powerful magic-users sought to create a protective magical shield around the entire planet. Their ritual went horrifically awry, backfiring in a destructive wave of warping magical energy, which scoured thousands of square miles of the continent of Aetrun, and created The Auric Wastes.
