Double Decker Canoe

Power Generation

Optimum rowers of either sex tend to be very tall, broad-shouldered, have long arms and legs due to the additional leverage their height provides in pulling the oar through the water; as well as practiced breathing and low levels of fat.

Propulsion

Rowers and paddlers

Canoes normally have a rowing team of minimum 8 members who are paired to work in tandem to fulfill different roles in operating the boat.
Stern Pairs
The stern pairs are responsible for setting the stroke rate and rhythm for the rest of the boat to follow.
Middle Pairs
The middle four (sometimes called the "power rows") are usually the less technical, but most powerful rowers of the crew.
Bow Pairs
The bow pairs are the more technical and generally regarded as the pair to set up the balance of the boat. They also have most influence on the line the boat steers.

Additional & auxiliary systems

Double Deck

The top section, which is essentially a smaller boat mounted on top the primary boat, serves to provide extra cargo space. This addition, even when empty, places its weight on the bottom boats's mid-section causing it is sink further to the water line. To compensate, the canoe is made slightly wider and its rim stretched higher.

Oars

The different lengths of the oars affect both the energy and performance that the rower has to put in. Oar lengths of a light, strong wood match the amount of space provided for oar storage on the boat and whether it is a short or long haul trip.   The blades can either be flat for general use or spooned for faster propulsion. A short oar makes quick but short strokes possible, even when heavily laden and the amount of swing is limited. Longer oars can be used to produce longer, slower strokes, which are easier to maintain over long distances; as was the case with several expeditions on the sauoomsae.
