Valley of the Kobold King
Cutting through the Skyreach Range, the Valley of the Kobold King is a deep canyon that haphazardly skews between the immense mountains of the range. Dominated by the isolationist Three Clans and their Kobold King, the Valley was seldom of interest until the emergence of Kalarol, the magical fuel upon which the Andran Empire and others have depended for their magical technology and way of life since its discovery 40 years ago. Now, adventurers and merchants are well-acquainted with the Valley and its only port historically accessible by foreigners - Haversworth .
However, the ways of the past have begun to change, for as Kalarol flows from the Valley, foreigners, goods and currencies flow in. In the forty years since the start of the Age of the Gilded Dragoness, the Maw which once closed off the Valley has slowly been opened by the current king, to the point that it is not rare to see foreigners in the towns and cities. Some welcome the foreigners, their culture and their wares. Most affect a mute indifference, choosing to go along with their business. Yet still there remain those who wish for the day the country's borders close again, and do not hesitate to show it. The most ardent of these are the Blinded Soul Brotherhood, a group backed by the leader of the Clan of the Wing, to whom Kalarol and the outsiders both are an affront to the gods.
Foreigners in the Valley who venture beyond Haversworth are generally expected to carry with them at all times a permit issued by the Three Clans, and present them to the local authorities at their request. To not have these red papers, so-called for the rough red colouration of their covers, is a crime. However, beyond that, visitors to the Valley are generally unobstructed by the Three Clans, and free to conduct commerce and perform jobs as they see fit.
