Ettin

This is not a single group of creatures. Instead, these are creatures who may be of one race, single mythic like creatures who possess great powers, or they may have great beauty or an extremely hideous appearance. In other words, Ettin is a catch all phrase for some of the more varied creatures inhabiting the continent. The tree people are some of the most commonly encountered Ettin in the world. At one time, they may have been docile or ambivalent to the outside world. However, since the arrival of the Eldar on the continent, the tree people have usually become antagonistic to almost all sentient creatures. As a rule, they will mischievously work against things like buildings, roads, and fields. They have also been known to take outright action against other creatures if they believe they can get away with it or if they have been threatened. Tree people are generally thought to be giants, but the truth is that they can come in all sizes, just as trees show up in the world. The secret to the size of a tree person is their age, ones that are millenia old can be over a hundred meters tall. However, tree people of this age are rare. Just like wood, tree people must care for their bodies or be subject to physical rot that comes as a direct consequence of their actions in the world. This is the tree people’s relationship to magic, whatever action they take in the world will eventually be taken out of their own skin. Since many tree people are jealous and protective as they grow older, they will eventually succumb to rot. Marauders and merchants of different races are known to cut living tree people down to access and harvest the various magical infused fungi which will grow upon older and rotting tree people. Historians believe this harvesting as well as harvesting body parts for magically infused wooden items may have been the cause of initial animosity between tree people and other races, but the initial reason is lost to time. Young tree people may be genetically identical to their parent tree, but also possess an innate talent to appear as Eldar, humans, and dwarves by altering their appearance. The only thing that stops older tree people from doing the same is their larger size.   Other ettin more rarely seen are elementals, rock ettin, and various creatures known as trolls and giants. Each one has its own reasons for being sympathetic, ambivalent, or antagonistic to different races or individuals. Many share the characteristics of the tree people in that they are mortal only in terms of self constitution rather than a limited lifespan. The Vergar have especially made contracts with hill and mountain trolls in order to make roads and other passes through their historical lands. These trolls generally only want to be left alone in order to contemplate existence and great nature preserves have been set aside for them to care for the areas.   Humans encountering any ettin should be careful in their dialogue. Due to their longevity, Ettin are incredibly wise even if not individually brilliant. Some will be quick to speak, but their words may have layers of meaning.   Ettins are native to all parts of the continent, and the world before that as they show up in the oldest lore.    Some consider Ettin lesser Ones.
