The Indentured
The slaves that work the mines of the Piercing Hills refer to themselves as the Indentured. Though Umra law permits the possibility of freedom, the cost - 50 gp - is so high that it is an impossibility for most. Still, there have been a lucky few who, through luck or theft, have earned enough money to free themselves of the mines.
All of The Indentured in Cliffsreach were purchased in Jaswa, either from the various plantations or the massive slave market in Qurg. For some, it is a relief to see familiar faces, even given the circumstances, and most of The Indentured believe themselves to be lucky that it was an Umran that bought them instead of a Vescanian.
Culturally, The Indentured are a very closed-off group; they obviously don't trust any of the Umran Guard and they think little of outsiders who do nothing more than bat an eye upon seeing their living conditions. For the few free men and women who have befriended The Indentured and learned their secretive ways of life, there was much wisdom - and political secrets - found.
